Just bought one of those 10 movies on one $10 dvd deals for Tom Cruise movies. Recently watched Collateral and Tropic Thunder. Days of Thunder is on deck.
I’ve seen it a ton, have read up on some back story. Apparently Don Simpson (producer, who played a driver in the film) was a raging coke head and just terrorized Daytona whores haha. The production was a mess and went over time and way over budget. In the end, DOT had a damn strong cast and managed to pull off a fine spiritual sequel to Top Gun. Days of Thunder is the quintessential movie to open up the 90s decade of badassery.

Wasn’t Cruise thinking of a sequel?
I think there were rumors. But I'm not sure Rick Hendrick was ready to sacrifice another fleet of cars. I remember reading the oral history of DoT on ESPN.com a few years back. Apparently for one of the wreck scenes, they engineered something like a telephone pole under one of the cars that pneumatically came out from under it to launch it in the air/roll it.
He wrecked...both my cars. He Wrecked Both My Cars! HE'S FIRED! YOU'RE FIRED! YOU'RE ALL FIRED!

They set you up for a solid hour that the bad guy is Rowdy Burns, and it turns out that the real bad guy is the weatherman who stole Bill Paxton's UN-REAL-IZED tornado ideas

The look Harry gives Cole when Russ Wheeler tells him he hopes he can drive his car as good as Cole did is classic Duvall. He could convey a whole arse scene vibe in one glance. I will watch anything Robert Duvall does or ever did.

I watched it when it was released in theatres back in the day. Haven't seen it since. Maybe I'll give it another watch

The first 45 mins of the film is essentially perfect.
The movie works best with Duvall and Cruise and their fathrrer/son, racer/mentor focus.
Once Kidman comes into the film and it starts going down the whole racing trauma lane, it gets much worse (that relative, the whole movie is great,) but the second half is just not nearly as good as the first.
Once Duvall is pushed back for romance and bromance, it's just not the same.
Randy Quaid is also phenomenal. The whole cast is top notch. Tony Scott at his peak.

Hit em on the high side Cole!
Love me some Days of Thunder. Might actually like it better than Top Gun.

It's amazing to me how much I love that movie considering I care not one bit about car racing of any sort.

Say that every time I’m riding with someone and we get out. I don’t think anyone’s picked up on it yet.

I know people are gushing about him in this thread, but it's an underrated perforce by Duvall. Its rarely mentioned among his films, but he is the glue that holds this movie together.

Kind of interesting... to me at least.
My wife was in that movie. She was a pit crew girlfriend. No I am not telling which one. Wife is Swedish so typical blonde back then. She is on screen for about 12 seconds total the entire movie. Many of the pit scenes for different racetracks were filmed in Daytona.
They had a long casting line at the mall in Daytona for extras. She was working for a bank at the time during college and went over with a friend. A few days later had a call back. Went down the next day and had photos taken. She spent 6 days on the set. Said Cruise was a short guy.and didn't mingle with anyone.
Said most of the cast kept to themselves except for John Reilly. Reilly was super friendly and took photos with anyone that asked..

I thought Kidman was the worst part.
Dr. Claire Lewicki vs. Dr. Elizabeth Clay
Did Dalton have the better Doctor?
Where does Dr. Cathy Ryan rank?
Anne Archer looks like an actual MD.
The other two look more like receptionists for male MB's

I didn't realize John C Reilly was on it until I caught it in tv not long ago.
That wasn't him. It was a young Cal Naughton Jr.
