Cool Hand Luke by far
Probably the most quotable movie of all time

If you take all the prison escapes, just how many end like Shawshank did???
Most end like Cool Hand Luke with prisoners being killed or captured again.
I was digging thru some newspaper archives to find out about an old state prison farm that used to be near the neighborhood I grew up in. There were tons of articles about escapes and shootouts over the years, and fellas being re-captured when they made it downtown or got on a bus. Another one a few miles away was supposedly the inspiration for the song “Midnight Special.” So the realism of Cool Hand Luke is intriguing.

Cool Hand Luke is probably a top 10 movie of all time for me, but it's not to me even close to being better than Shawshank. It's not. Shawshank is the probably the best movie ever created by man kind. Outside of maybe the Godfather, there isn't a legit other movie better than Shawshank, not even Cool Hand Luke

I could argue that no actor was ever better in a film than Newman as chain gang Luke. It's the epitome of an all time movie star role. He is the absolute supernova of that film.
But it also can't be discounted the stellar quality of the entire production, from the Conrad Hall's photography, to the Lalo Schiffrin score, to the incredible supporting cast that ranged from Dennis Hopper to Strother Martin and George Kennedy, to Harry Dean Stanton.
It's THE prison film in my opinion that all others are measured up against.
There's also nothing like catching Cool Hand Luke on TCM on a rainy spring Saturday afternoon. It's perfect.
In saying all of that, Shawshank is the more rewatchable film. It's smoother and more enjoyable, and the hero doesn't become a martyr at the end, so you feel a little bit better when it's over.
They are vastly different films, but overall Cool hand Luke has much more of an edge, yet it wade 25 yrs prior to the other.
The real answer is, though, there is no answer. It's like saying which is better, The Searchers or Unforgiven. Two vastly unanswerable quatesions for elite level filmmaking.

Shawshank is more rewatchable.
I prefer The Longest Yard to either

Cool Hand Luke for me but once again that's probably influenced by my age. No issue with Shawshank though, that is an excellent movie that I re-watch pretty often

Funny piece of trivia. The guy who played Captain Hadley(Clancy Brown) in Shawshank...also does the voice for Mr. Krabs in SpongeBob. So whenever I watch SS...I can't un-see him as Mr. Krabs.

Shawshank has been the top rated movie on imdb for like the last 18 years.. I think Godfather may have edged it out for a few months years ago, I didn't really think this would be close but I guess it must be a generational thing.. also some hipsters like to say Shawshank isn't a good movie for some weird reason (oh, because they are hipsters)

I love them both but my vote is for Shawshank.
Both are top 100 movies of all time.

Shawshank is a better overall movie, but Cool Hand Luke is an all timer.
Actually showed it to my 14 year old son this past weekend, and the following day he came up to me and said, "I was just thinking...Cool Hand Luke was a great movie."
And obviously, I've run around quoting the movie for days since then.

I could easily argue this one from either position. Having said that, Shawshank, if I can only take one.
