Shawshank will never be sweeter than that mid-late 90s spot when TNT would air it non-stop like a summer version of A Christmas Story.

Paul Newman is my favorite actor and Lucas Jackson is an all time great character.
But Shawshank Redemption is one of the best complete movies ever put onto film imo. It is perfect.

Both are great, but
My vote goes to Cool Hand Luke.
The great acting performances of George Kennedy as Dragline, Strother Martin as Captain, Jo Van Fleet as Arleta, Lou Antonio as Koko, and of course Paul Newman as Luke were just incredible.
Also, there’s that great performance of Harry Dean Stanton singing Just a Closer Walk With Thee! Simply amazing!

Fun Fact: The author of the novel (Donn Pearce) was the actor who played Sailor.
The famous line, "What we have here is failure to communicate" was not in the novel, and Pearce hated the line.
He claimed a Southern warden would never talk like that, and since he actually spent time on a chain-gang in the South, we could at least take him at his word.

Cool Hand Luke for me.
Shawshank is an excellent film, but CHL takes it because I see it as more realistic. If you take all the prison escapes, just how many end like Shawshank did???
Most end like Cool Hand Luke with prisoners being killed or captured again.
