Shawshank is an excellent film, but CHL takes it because I see it as more realistic.

Interesting comment. I've never considered CHL to be completely authentic in its portrayal of that eras southern prisons.

Let's see, oppressive conditions, isolation hot boxes for punishment, prisoners working on chain gangs doing brush control and road work, communicating with guards like they are God himself-----"yes boss, whatever you say boss", hounds used for chasing escapees, shoot first, ask questions later attitude.

Pretty much what I was thinking.
If that wasn't an accurate description of that eras southern prisons then I don't think I want to know the accurate one.

I watched Cool Hand Luke once. It sucked. The “acting” is bad, and The main character sucks.

To be fair, you probably have more experience in that area than the rest of us. I’ll concede that. You’re probably more of an expert on Southern prison convict life.

But just based on a little coincidental archival research that I’ve done, I think CHL does have some realistic framework.

Sounds like you need to spend a night in the box.

CLH and Shawshank are both among the best movies ever but treat yourself to a viewing of The Birdman of Alcatraz with Burt Lancaster or Papillion with Steve McQueen for more doses of prison life.

“I can eat 50 eggs.” (So cocky)

“Do you trust your wife?” (So ballsy)

A couple of critiques of these two films.

Robert Stroud was more accurately "The Birdman of Leavenworth" as birds or any other animals were strictly prohibited at Alcatraz. By all accounts he was considered a very dangerous homosexual inmate and a world class a$$hole.

As for Papillion, it is generally accepted today that Charriere made up nearly 100 percent of the story, as no one involved at the time could corroborate any of his tale. Fine film nonetheless imo.

Andy was living in a Hilton (once he stopped getting raped)

Clint maybe didn't have it much harder...But I'd rather brave the San Francisco Bay at night then a mile of the shite smelling foulness.

Luke didn't have it easy but at least he wasn't on Devil's Island.

Pappillion may be a story overheard or conjured but there was no falsehood in the horrific details of life on Devils Island.

Count of Monte Cristo had the worst Prison of the three:

It's a great movie. Better than the miniseries with the overhyped Frenchman.

Shawshank. And it’s a generational thing too.

Cool Hand Luke made prison definitely look unpleasant, but there were no “Sisters” in Luke. Correct me if I am wrong.
