He strikes me as the type of guy who is very talented and knows it, but that makes him completely unwilling to take any criticism whatsoever, even when it's something as obvious and stupid as bad sound mixing. It's a common trap a lot of talented or brilliant people fall into it and is quite annoying.

Audio is the FIRST thing - the VERY FIRST THING - every content creator knows to get right

How does Nolan not know this?

Nolan idolizes Michael Mann... Who is one of the most talented sound design directors in cinema history.

Maybe Nolan should rip him more than he alredy has. Tenet was totally unacceptable.

I’m sure he does. He’s just choosing to do it this way for whatever reason

The meme factor of the loud horn sounds and background noise is distracting and takes away from the experience.

For every single moment of epic-ness, I’m distracted 5X other times.

Good. Because they are exceptionally loud. And not in a good way really. Several times his movies have been so loud it was either painful or distracting from the movie itself.

I love Nolan movies but that’s a legitimate complaint.

His sound mixing is awful.

And, by the way,

quote:

I was a little shocked to realize how conservative people are when it comes to sound. Because you can make a film that looks like anything, you can shoot on your iPhone, no one’s going to complain. But if you mix the sound a certain way, or if you use certain sub-frequencies, people get up in arms.

He’s pretty uneducated about audiences if he’s shocked by this. It’s pretty well known that people are more tolerant of low-quality video than they are of low-quality audio. There have been scientific studies using YouTube bounce rates to show this.

It’s especially true in movies. It’s not being conservative about sound mixing to want to be able to HEAR THE DIALOGUE.

It's simply mind-blowing that he doesn't get it.

Tenet was like trying to read an epic novel with smudged type.

inaudible dialogue is another.
I have to run subtitles for almost every movie these days it seems like.

Amazing how much I missed before. Some of the best lines are muttered or quiet.

I've literally rewatched movies with subtitles on and it's like a whole new movie.

Black Sails and the British Sherlock are two examples of shows that aren't worth watching with subtitles off. You miss about 90% of what's going on.

The music all through Interstellar kept me on he edge of my seat, not the dialogue.

Once you learn how to tweak the subtitles on your TV so that they are an aid and not an annoyance, movies become a greater joy.

Having not read the books, I had no idea who was who in Lord of the Rings and didn’t care for it. But after rewatching it with subtitles, I fell in love with the trilogy.

Any movie with heavy British accents requires subtitles for pure enjoyment.

Yeah...I tend to like to be able to hear what the characters are saying. I think it's because I assume that what they are saying is useful information for me to know...

I like Nolan a lot, but for probably the first third of Tenant I had no idea what anyone said. Until I got home and saw others had the same problem, I assumed I was going deaf.

I can't speak for Tenet, as I have yet to see it, but Interstellar was a film driven more by its visuals than by its story. It was Nolan's ode to 2001. Dunkirk was very similar.

I haven't seen Tenet, but no one has brought up Inception yet.

The sound design of that movie was a huge factor in making it a great film.

Maybe I’m in a weird minority but I have never had problems with any of Nolan’s audio except maybe Batman’s smoker voice and the first few minutes of Interstellar.

I heard all these complaints about Tenet but saw it twice and had no issues.

I like Nolan but wouldn’t call myself a fanboy by any means.

One of the big issues with Nolan's movies is they tend to use the full dynamic range of what is considered standard for movie theaters. MANY theaters reduce the max SPL of "loud" movies which without a compression algorithm reduces the SPL of the quiet passages as well sometimes making dialog difficult to understand. This can be made worse or better depending on the speakers the theater uses, it will be less of an issue if the theater uses horn-loaded speakers like Klipsh since they tend to emphasize the mid-range.

On a well set up system, Nolan movies sound incredible.

Nolan's response is akin to building a sports car that only performs on the world's most expensive track surfaces... and then blaming the drivers who tell him the cars handle poorly on most roads.

If he wants to do separate releases with different sound production for the very few great sound theaters then great, that's added value. Until then be less of an elitist prick and fix your goddamn sound dialog.
