Richard Riehle -- famous for his role as Tom Smykowski in "Office Space" -- is dead ... TMZ has learned.
Friends of Richard tell TMZ ... he died of natural causes last Thursday in Los Angeles.
He was an acclaimed character actor, appearing in over 400 projects during a long career in Hollywood.
Richard's best known for his work in "Office Space" ... he plays Tom, the product manager who gets laid off from Initech, survives a hit-and-run accident, and lands a massive financial settlement that allows him to follow his dreams and build his prototype "Jump to Conclusions" mat. He's got tons of memorable scenes and lines, and is a cult favorite.
Richard was 78.

Played Sergeant Devon O'Malley, in The Wind Around the Tower" (S9/E4) or Murder, She Wrote. Initially skeptical of Jessica’s concerns about what was an apparent death by natural causes, eventually comes around to realize the owner of the castle has been murdered by his conniving and unfaithful wife via a complicated plot involving ghosts, literal wind around a tower, and death by asphyxiation. Great episode. Very solid performance.
(Only pic I could find).

Played a key role in arguably the GOAT Star Trek episode ("The Inner Light").

They set it up so well earlier in the movie with his fool proof plan to win bets. "Yeah nicky had a fool proof plan. if he won he collected if he lost he told the bookmakers to go frick themselves. what were they going to do get some muscle? Nicky was the muscle"

I just found out about this and am genuinely sad. Office Space is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I was having lunch a few years back at Fred 62 in Los Feliz and Richard sat next to me at the counter. I didn't say anything as I never do when seeing a celebrity, no matter how famous or not. I was just giddy like a child seeing Mr Jump to Conclusions Mat.
RIP!
