The newest judge on American Idol is someone very familiar to long-time viewers of the music competition.
Carrie Underwood, who won the fourth season of Idol back in 2005, is set to join the show as a judge for its coming 23rd season early next year. She’ll take over the spot vacated by Katy Perry, who departed at the end of last season. Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan are expected back.
Underwood’s return to Idol is set to be formally announced Thursday. ABC declined comment.
Underwood is arguably the most successful Idol winner in the show’s history , having gone on to win eight Grammy Awards and a combined 25 Academy of Country Music (16) and Country Music Association (nine) awards. She’s also had eight albums (plus a greatest hits compilation) top the U.S. country charts; four of them also hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Perry announced in February that season 22 of American Idol would be her last as a judge, saying that she wanted to return to focusing on her own music. She, Richie and Bryan made up show’s judging panel for the entirety of its seven-season run on ABC, which revived the show in 2018 — two years after Fox ended Idol’s initial 15-season run.
The 23rd season of American Idol is slated to premiere in early 2025. Live, virtual auditions are set to begin Aug. 12.

I used to love American idol but since it went to Disney I haven’t watched it.
I really wish Disney would sell espn
The only time I will watch any Disney product is during college football season

I probably quit when Simon Cowell left.
Hell, I didn’t really care about the singing I just thought he was hilarious

I may have only ever watched the Carrie Underwood season. I do wonder if Katy Perry regrets it now that her lead single got panned.

I watched her season and Kat McPhee's in full.
I watched a good bit of this season for Abi. She was special.
Probably not. She's still the Queen of Pop.

She don’t skip leg day.

Show needs to have ended 10 years ago. Every “contestant” admits to training for years to be on the show. It no longer about finding the hidden talent.

I will watch now twice as much as I did before. Of course, 0 x 2 = 0

I actually agree with you. I haven't watched the last couple of seasons, but I know what's going on from all the previous seasons. The show just is not what it started out to be. Basically just a professional show now.

Glad someone knows the rules.

Beside Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert (thanks to Queen) and Jennifer Hudson who would you consider successful contestants? Most of the contestants that people seem to rave about during the season don't go anywhere afterwords. I've read the contract they have to sign is ridiculous.

Taylor Hicks did the “Call Paul” song for Finebaum Show

Noah Thompson was literally a construction worker who had a friend sign him up.

Hope she's less annoying than Katy.

Scotty mccreery has had a good career. Has 3 of the best country songs in the last 5 years.
Matters to her
Cab in a solo
Damn straight
Gaby Barret had a #1 song I think.
Alejandro dude was great.. then just turned out super weird.
Last 5-10 has been worse. They have a weird Schick now... where they can't even tell them anything bad once they get down to 24 and live shows. They just say everyone is great. I imagine that's the Disney impact. Auditions are good, but beyond that it gets really bad
