Along with Liz Phair, I would say the three of them were the dominant trio of female alternative rock heroes (you could argue Alanis, but she's more of a one-album wonder, and a bit more mainstream). If I were putting together a 90s female alternative soundtrack, those are the first three artists I would use (along with some Elastica, Bikini Kill, the Muffs, and Seven Year Bitch for some more obscure but alt bona fides).
If this movie used Veruca Salt songs, I would have already bought advance tickets. Seether is as good as it gets for 90's rock.
In all reality, I'm just shocked people care this much. There are two 10+ page threads on CM in the past two days. This is the new Black Panther for this board.

Indeed. I've even bought in to the discussion and my initial view, which I will stick to, was "meh, the lead looks off, I'll wait until it hits streaming or On Demand."

Spice Girls own all these little alt bitches
Also a Nirvana song has already been confirmed to be in the movie. Idk why people are acting like it’s just chick bands

Butch Vig and Garbage are both iconic 90s names. Hole is an odd choice considering they were only famous because of Kurt Cobain. Overall, Hole was a pretty crappy band. The Cranberries were much better, but hey, I get that they wanted some shitty angry girl-grunge song to pump up the chicks at the movie.

B/c there is a certain segment of people who wants to be permanently pissed off.

Garbage isn't a girl band. The only female member is Shirley Mason. It's a rock band fronted by a woman, and Shirley pretty much kicks arse.

Pretty on the Inside came out to really good reviews before they were together. Being with Cobain may have gained Hole more notoriety but they were already making noise on the alternative scene when they coupled up.

They didn't even chart a single until 1994. I don't care what the critics were saying. Without Kurt's connections (one of those being Butch Vig) they would have never been famous. Hell, Kurt probably wrote all of Hole's popular songs and just didn't take credit for it. Violet sounds exactly like something he would have written. Come to think of it, Hole is a perfect fit for this movie.

He's not wrong. More of these 90's girls seeing Captain Marvel owned Spice World than all of the Garbage and Hole 90's CDs combined.

Garbage sold 14 million records. Hole sold 4 million. Spice Girls were more popular (and I got nothing against 'em, Tell Me What You Want is a catchy as hell single), but it's not like Garbage and Hole were obscure bands. Besides, little kids listened to Spice Girls. Twentysomethings listened to Liz Phair. (Well, and Dar Williams... God, every girl I knew had her CD, but they aren't putting acoustic folk on an action movie soundtrack).
And if you're going for 90s alternative, these are the go to bands. And you don't want to go with some too quiet like Indigo Girls or Cranberries. You want big guitars and power chords. And like others have pointed out, Nirvana is on the soundtrack. She's in a Nine Inch Nails shirt. It won't just be female bands, it's just what the critic, who was a woman, was attracted to as a self-described 90s girl. Let someone be nostalgic for their youth for 5 f'n seconds.
Though I do think a little "Rebel girl" by Bikini Kill would be awesome just on general principle.
ETA: I saw the suggestion of No Doubt, which they would be wise to avoid. First, Gwen Stefani is still famous, so you lose some of the era identifier. She's no longer restricted to the 90s and also.. "Just a Girl" is way too on the nose. That should be a no go on simple grounds of it being way too hacky of a reference. Veruca Salt also works, as they are trapped in the 90s as well.

The Smashing Pumpkins had a chick bass player. Cherub Rock is better than anything Hole ever put out.

More power to ya man. I just think that if they're pulling songs from those bands, then the soundtrack won't even be close to as stellar as the Guardians movies, and don't believe anyone would name any of those bands off the top of their head when asked to list iconic 90s bands or musical acts in general.
The Guardians soundtrack includes music from 10cc, Raspberries, The Five Stairsteps, and Rupert Holmes. None of these are groups the average Joe would know by name unless they happened to be alive at the time. Are you really going to argue the guy who sang the Pina Colada song was a 70s icon?
Posted on 3/6/19 at 5:19 pm to Dr RC
Tbf more people probably know of the Pina Colada song than the existence of Garbage and Hole
Posted on 3/6/19 at 5:24 pm to Dr RC
there were so many one-hit wonders back in the alt-90s days. They could have done a lot better than Garbage or Hole if they wanted cool obscure songs. For one, The Breeders "Cannonball" was an awesome song with a chick singer that everyone that was in college in the 90s would recognize in a heartbeat, but I doubt anyone else knows exists.
Posted on 3/6/19 at 5:27 pm to MF Doom
But it's not an iconic song from an iconic musician. It's a cheesy novelty hit like The Purple People Eater or Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini.
Also, that isn't the point. Fatkid is writing off the soundtrack b/c he thinks Garbage and Hole aren't iconic enough while comparing it to the GOTG soundtrack yet roughly half of the music on it is from one hit wonders that hardly anyone could name if their life depended on it.

Garbage is not and obscure band at all. I'd argue the same for Hole even though they had a lesser degree of success.
