I hearya, but I like what DC is doing. I like that Superman came into a world where heroes have already existed and been in the shadows. We've had origin stories before, we don't need to see them all again. Besides, you and I both know that if DC had done the same thing that Marvel had done, then everyone would have been calling shenanigans for them copying Marvel's "style". So they go another way, dropping you off in the middle of a story that has already started, and people still call shenanigans. Damned if you do, damned if you don't really.

Plus I don't get why people are so angry about the tone of the movies. We've had light and campy DC movies/shows before. Batman in the 60's and 90s, Superman in the 70's/80s and then in the 90's with the show and that god awful movie in 2006, Green Lantern in 2011 (the most bland and unimaginative superhero movie ever written, but still not the worst), and then the Wonder Woman show. I like something more adult and gritty. It's what made Batman Begins and The Dark Knight so great. If you want light-hearted fun and quips and a nice little happyily ever after in your superhero movies, then the MCU is for you. If you want something engineered for adults that doesn't substitute style for substance, that doesn't have quips and jokes every 3 minutes, that isn't all wrapped up nice and neat in a bow and has some weight to it, then DC is for you. For me, I enjoy both. But judging from the response to BvS it seems like you can only have one or the other, which is a damn shame because in 2008, we had both (TDK and Iron Man) and people loved each for what they were. Now? It can only be one or the other, not both.

Marvel just had patience and took time to build their characters, people have a connection to them.

DC didn't even have to do that. They could've wrote good stories that perfectly understand and shows the characters being true to their origins and styles and people would've loved and reacted positively to it. DC could've caught up with Marvel but they had to do it right with perfect showcases of the characters instead of the complete abandonment of the source material we got.

I guarantee you that if Man of Steel and BvS was directed and helmed by competent directors and writers like Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns and maybe Joss Whedon directing them with Bruce Timm filling the same role that Kevin Fiege is serving for Marvel, it would be light years better and DC wouldn't be in the shite hole it is right now with Snyder and Goyer.

If you're making comic book movies, you have to hire people who understand, love and respect the characters, not hacks who see them and their background as an obstacle.

Why do I care about Superman's death? You barely established him as a hero.

And that's after they established Superman as a complete dickhead that did not look the least approachable.

This sums up Snyder's Superman to me who's is a bleak, joyless and colorless character

You live in a different world if you think the vast majority of movie goers give two shits about the director, much less even know his name.

The average movie watcher is an idiot. I would bet mucho dinero that if you polled an audience from batman vs superman, less than 10% would know who the director was.

I was talking about critics, not the general movie audience. Separate note, I would take you up on that 10% bet though for multiple reasons.

Why do people still not understand? It's not about the tone. It's not about the "grittiness" or the "darkness". It's not about the "fun" or the "lightness". It's about first and foremost making a good movie. A good story. It's about piecing that story together that makes a movie good or not. It's about the execution. It's about the characterization. Doing a good job establishing interesting characters. We've seen good "dark" superhero movies and bad. We've seen good "light" superhero movies and bad. It's not about the tone when it comes to overall acceptance and quality of it. That's the fact of the matter.

Kristian Harloff and John Campea did a 5 minute video review for Schmoes Know. It's not really spoilery in any way.

Both gave 9/10 reviews.

Video

Notable quotes:

Kristian Harloff

quote:

I liked it a little bit more than the Avengers...

Some of the best action in a Marvel film. Tone was carried over from The Winter Soldier.

Biggest complaint was the villain. Wasn't a big part of the movie.

John Campea

quote:

I think [the airport scene] is the greatest action scene in movie history.

We were worried, what if this more like Civil Dispute? We got a war.

Not another Avengers, distinctly a Captain America movie.

Shouldn't have even had Zemo in the movie. But that's the only thing keeping this from being, easily, the greatest comic book movie of all time.

I don't think any are really bad, my issue with the Marvel films is they're completely forgettable for me. The only movie I've watched several times is Cap 2. That's why I'm so excited about this one. The others just don't hold up over time. I tried watching the Avengers the other day and I couldn't even finish it

Did you see Iron Man 3?

I think that's easily the weakest of the franchise. Iron Man 2 wasn't bad, in my opinion, but it wasn't great either.

I would rank them:
1. Iron Man
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
3. The Avengers
4. Thor: The Dark World
5. The Avengers: Age of Ultron
6. Thor
7. Captain America: The First Avenger
8. Iron Man 2
9. Hulk
10. Iron Man 3

I think the consensus is that IM2 is probably the worst Marvel flick. It was not good. IM3 wasn't bad,

then I am in the minority

I can rewatch IM2 and not think much about it, not great, but not bad

to me IM3 has zero rewatch value whatsoever - unstable exploding nanobots? the Mandarin bullshite?- that was a terrible terrible movie. Only swing and a miss by Marvel IMO

Thor: The Dark World is the weakest Marvel film to me, and it is by no means terrible.

Ironman is not No. 1 on my list. I would have it at No. 3 behind > 1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 2. The Avengers then 3. Ironman

But it will drop to No. 4 now with the release of Civil War who looks destined to move to Numero Uno!

My current top 5 is probably

1. Winter Soldier
2. Guardians of the Galaxy
3. Iron Man
4. Avengers
5.

Actually too hard to put a number 5 for me. These four stand out as a higher tier. Civil war will likely land on this tier though, and I fully expect to have to continue reshuffling the list throughout phase 3.

Just because I am frustrated about the unfair Batman vs. Superman critic reviews. I just want to comment that some of these reviews are over the top.

We are looking at relatively similar themes with Batman vs Superman more set up for this super hero angst from society. Batman vs Superman gets absolutely shite on and wasn't a bad movie. This is suppose to be basically the GOAT.

FWIW, I will happily go see this movie. I just find it ridiculous.

Stop blaming the critics for BvS being a failure. Blame Snyder, Goyer, and the studio. They made a highly reactive and soulless product. Almost everyone I've talked to has hated it. The ones who liked it are using the same arguments that the people used to defend the prequels.

Ebert's First Rule: It's not what a movie it's about, it's how it is about".

They could have the exact same themes for all I care, but if one is executed much more better and I can believe the characters and their motivations, then it is better.

I forgot about Guardians of the Galaxy, thank you! Mine will differ slightly from yours which lists as follows;

1. The Winter Soldier
2. Guardians of the Galaxy
3. The Avengers
4. Ironman

but will change I'm sure come May 5th with the release of Civil War which will probably jump to Numero Uno for me.

Wow. Seriously? You're going to blame Man of Steel for Ultron's suckage?

I suspect this is the case really. Ultron is a mass murdering unstable psycho who kills people by the millions. Loki in his opening scene of the Avengers killed more people than Ultron did. Zod really just wants to rule and Snyder went balls to the wall fricked up with him. It works for Ultron, but not for Zod. Because it doesn't work for Zod (or really an intro to Superman at large), Marvel overreacted and didn't let Ultron massacre the innocents. Without mass murdering, then Ultron simply feels neutered.
