Never really thought of this as a sub genre until I saw operation mincemeat and read a review of it. It used this term to describe it and it inspired me to rewatch a few of them. Darkest Hour, Imitation Game, and Dunkirk (more of a war movie but without much combat more than some dog fighting).

I really really enjoy all of these movies. Something about the British being the last bastion of liberty in Europe while the Nazis ran roughshod over everything else. Holding on for dear life long enough for us to have our launching point to invade the continent. It creates a great setting for good stories and historical drama.

Does anybody others have others that would fall into this category?

This was very illuminating about their lives during the war, if you like reality drama-docs....

Mrs. Miniver is one of my favorite movies period. It was one of the movies that was made before Pearl Harbor to try to get the U.S. into WWII. It may be considered the original WWII Homefront movie.

Trailer on YouTube

on JustWatch

Great cast:
quote:

Greer Garson-Mrs. Miniver, Walter Pidgeon-Clem Miniver, Teresa Wright-Carol Beldon, May Whitty-Lady Beldon, Henry Travers-Mr. Balla, Reginald Owen-Foley, Richard Ney-Vin Miniver

Can stream on WatchTCM: https://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/titles/329

It may be on Max under the TCM hub.

Another good TV series is Island at War (2004). It's just one season, and included with a PRIME subscription.

quote:

A harrowing, sprawling mini-series produced by Masterpiece Theatre, "Island at War" chronicles three families - the upper-class Dorrs, the middle-class Mays and the working-class Jonases - as they endure five years under Nazi rule on St. Gregory island, a fictionalized location representing the Channel Islands.

The Germans occupy the island very much like the British occupied the 1700's America in the AMC series TURN.

Hope and Glory.

The blitz from the viewpoint of an 8-year old boy. Actually John Boorman’s memoir.

It’s smart, funny and very well done. My description above does not do it justice.

My mother was the same age during the blitz. She said it got the details right.

Was coming back to post about it! Great movie that shows some great examples of the adage, "Boys will be boys." Those kids do exactly what we'd have done in that situation. Love this movie.

Yanks (1979) with Richard Gere, Lisa Eichhorn, Vanessa Redgrave, William Devane, is a good one about American soldiers in England during the war. Can rent it on a few apps according to JustWatch..

Hanover Street (1979) featuring Harrison Ford, Lesley-Anne Down and Christopher Plummer is a similar movie, with more war story.. It's included with PRIME

Does this qualify?

quote:

It Happened Here shows an alternative history in which the United Kingdom has been invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. The plot follows the experiences of an Irish nurse working in England, who encounters people who believe collaboration with the invaders is for the best, while others are involved in the resistance movement against the occupiers and their local collaborators. The film's title is an allusion to Sinclair Lewis's 1936 antifascist novel It Can't Happen Here.
The young director Kevin Brownlow would go on to make superb documentaries on film history, including my fave doc series of all time, Hollywood, on silent movies.

I was disappointed by this

I prefer The War Lover w/Steve McQueen, if you want to see a wartime romance

Since we're including movies w/GIs:

Great cast and an amusing if sometimes talky script, by Paddy Chayefsky of all people.

This was Garner's favorite film role.

Nanny McPhee Returns is based in this period and actually touches a lot of the subject. Plus it’s fun for the whole family.

This is the definitive one, directed by a man who was the same age as the main character during The Blitz. It's basically an autobiography.

I like WWII era movies where it's the backdrop for other stories (but often the conflicts of the day, Holocaust, etc. do feature). Same for movies with the Troubles as a backdrop.

Regarding WWII, it's a reach, but The Dig falls into the category I'm talking about. Might not feature the war effort as much as you're looking for, but there is some.
