This review couldn't be more obvious, as well as a total lie:

Bright is a mess. It's been dragged by critics and viewers alike, and it's a wonder what contribution Netflix thought Bright would make to the film industry.

Translation: Get the frick out of our business Netflix.

The reviews are nothing short of a threat.

I just finished this movie. It definitely isn't deserving of the terrible reviews but also wasn't very good IMHO.

What business is that though? Amazon is going the traditional theater release route with the films they buy and the "movie industry" seems ok with it. So is this Big Theater throwing their weight around? Surely the movie producers themselves are happy to see more money coming into the industry, no?

This is a very bad movie. The modern day fantasy aspect kept me somewhat interested but nothing worked.

The buddy cop banter was all super cringey. Things just happen to advance the “plot” with no real motivation.

Somewhat Spoilery....

There’s a random prophecy dropped into the final 3rd of the movie. Did we really need the bad elf to explicitly remind Will Smith not to do the most predictable thing ever?

It wasn't awful. But it is not a movie that I would have ever chosen to watch in a theatre. And I'm sure it would have bombed if they released it in that manner.

Although the set up was over the top heavy handed at times, I enjoyed it.

But the end was absolutely flat. I was expecting a lot more out of the final fight scene. Maybe even see the "Dark Lord"? But nope. The most predictable thing possible with Will Smith being a "Bright" to save the day. Plus how the chick elf just went through 30 armed feds earlier in the move but couldn't get through 2 regular guys? Maybe I just wanted to see more magic and less average fight scenes.

And was that a fricking dragon flying over the city at one point? That seems like it should have been addressed at some point, no?

Doesn't sound like a cop's job.

The dragon was just a teaser to show there are many mythical creatures in the world.

This movie works could literally be middle earth carried forward a few millennia

I get that

Just seems like a good opportunity to really go all in on the magic/mythical creature

instead it ended with a very anticlimactic ending

I assume they wanted to evaluate audience response first prior to the increase in funds needed to go with the larger budget for that route.

The good aspect is that the responses have been ok from the majority of those not called “critics”.

Hopefully the sequel has the dark lord and more magic.

I suspect it’s the studio them selves. Netflix did it all in house, so the model change that scares them is a new player that controls the entire chain from production to distribution without having to share with anyone.

Amazon on the other hand worked within the system.

Sometimes an orc is just an orc and not a comment on race relations. It's a fantasy story. Chance is forcing that allegory because he's a racial activist. Besides, if orcs are meant to represent blacks then what of the actual black people that are present? How can you discuss allegorical racism of blacks when blacks are present and not the object of the racism?

Enjoyed it. It's exactly what I expected from a NetFlix film, fun and entertaining from start to finish. My biggest gripe would be, I wish it just concentrated on being a police drama and the turmoil between the races/species. I think the main plot is what held it back up the most.

Bump.

Agreed. Not ground-breaking, but a fun romp for 2 hours with some very solid worldbuilding.

I found it entertaining enough. Would definitely watch a sequel.

I watched it last night and really enjoyed it too. The plot point about will smith was obvious but other than that it was a fun movie and did a descent job of setting up the world in the time available

I’m now also interested in seeing some Orc football.

But given how strong they are, I don’t how how humans go up against them.

The first half was decent but got a little hokey in the second.
