I didn't want to highjack the other thread regarding the Lalo character in BCS but I'm currently finishing up season 5 of BCS and as much as I enjoyed BB I think I like BSC more. Main reason is its less dark and has more funny situations with Jimmy who is hilarious but also has its tough drug dealing criminal element as well. I also was never a huge fan of Jessie in BB he kind of annoys the hell out of me the way he annunciates his words most of the time and seems to overact in a lot of his scenes. All the main characters that I liked in BB minus Walt are the huge focus in BCS like Jimmy, Mike and Gus and the addition of Lalo is the icing on the cake he is fantastic. Kim Wexler has a sexy side to her so there is that addition too and she does a nice job too.
I know that they are two completely different shows but didn't realize how I enjoy BCS more and more after watching some of the BB episodes again from time to time.
No spoilers here I am looking forward to watching season premiere of season 6 that I have recorded.

Recency bias.

Breaking bad is near flawless and better imo.

The jimmy and his brother storylines really weren't great.

Yeah I agree maybe recency bias helps and as BSC moves toward the beginning of the BB series its getting better and better for sure. I like Hank being back in the picture too. Forgot to mention him above in the OP he is definitely a shinning star in BB.

While they weren’t the most entertaining you now understand what drives Jimmy

I have to disagree with you here. I thought Chuck's character was awesome and amazingly acted by Michael McKean.

Better Call Saul has been brilliant from the beginning.

It took Breaking Bad a while to find its stride.

I felt the same way about Walt and his family storylines in the earlier seasons of BB

Just comparing the earlier seasons, I felt neither show hits it’s stride yet. But BCS, while it’s premise wasn’t as interesting, had better overall acting and writing. It was a slow burn so I get why some didn’t like it

I've actually been rewatching season 5 of BB due to BCS being back and I'm being reminded how laughably implausible Walter's character is. No one would be threatened by his billy badass act and his constant wanting to discuss things is moronic.

Much prefer BCS as the characters are much more believable even with some of the crazy situations Jimmie gets himself into.

Not even going into the fact I was pleased when that assclown Hank got his head blown off. Arrogant prick.

Like I’ve said, BCS is better than BB and that’s not a knock on BB. More just a testament to how good BCS is. I’ve been rewatching and just finished S3, and it’s excellent. The Chuck/Jimmy thing is awesome, even if not as exciting as the Mike/Nacho side. But both are great and both are converging.

Upon rewatch, I find almost no parts of BCS boring or lacking at all. And the show does a great job of showing the human/moral side of someone who we know is a total piece of shite human in BB, and also how he slowly is turning into him.

BB is very good, but not only did it take a bit to hit its stride, but S5 was lacking once a certain someone (since no spoilers) died.

Upon rewatch through S3, my only knock (if it even is one really) is how much VG goes to the well of “song montage with tons of scenes spliced together.” But the payoff is almost always great, so it doesn’t really bother me.

He's watched BB according to his OP.

And the show is old enough spoilers shouldn't be an issue.

Idk but Odenkirk is really awesome to watch in BCS just as Cranston is in BB. And Mike is one of my favorite characters of all time, and he's in both, so it's really a win win.

Fun fact about Jonathan Banks btw

quote:

He has received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (1989, 2013, 2015–2017, 2019) for his work on all three series, making him the only actor with nominations as a main cast member for three shows in this category, two of which feature him as the same character.

If I was the Phoenix kingpin Walt would have gotten a bullet in the head when he threw out his tough guy "Say my name" and then Mike and Jessie would have split the 15 mil while I had my precursors.

So no, he would not own me.

I think people now downplay the earlier seasons of Breaking Bad because we now know where the show ends up. 10 years ago, these were not 'dragging' or boring story lines at all, but if you rewatch it knowing what happens in seasons 3-5, it definitely seems that way.

As far as production value goes, neither is better than the other. The styles are different but they fit: you can't make BCS and BB in the exact same way, that would be absurd

The highs of BCS don't come close to the highs of BB

I love BCS but Jesus Christ is the show fricking slow.

It was completely unnecessary for the season premiere to be 2 and half hours long with how little actually happened

I've enjoyed both shows, but I knew nothing about Breaking Bad and it grabbed me from the start. I anticipated Better Call Saul due to Breaking Bad and felt that it was really slow going in the 1st season.

I still thought the acting was great, but it was just a slow-moving storyline. If I had not known the Saul character and had faith in the directors that it would get really good, I'm not sure I would have kept watching had I just tuned in randomly like what happened when I got hooked on Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad was pretty dramatic from the 1st episode.

no he wouldn't have. Thats why you wouldn't have been a kingpin, you don't want to make money.
