Some of the scenes were stupid enough to pull me out of the movie. Like Barry Pepper's photographer taking pictures so aggressively that must have thought his camera could kill NVA soldiers and that his pictures would singlehandedly end the war

Or the wives receiving the "We Regret to Inform You" letters while the battle was still going on. Did it really happen like that? I don't know. But it was farfetched enough.

Or the Chinese guy bragging that his wife just gave birth to a son, so you just know something awful is going to happen to him. And sure enough, a few scenes later, he's turned into a fried eggroll.

Jimmy Nakayama died on Nov 17, 1965. His daughter was born on Nov 7, 1965. So there is truth to that scene.

Although this is your opinion and therefore by definition can't be wrong, I will say that you are the only person I have ever heard claim the second half of FMJ was better than the first.

Honestly, though, the Vietnam War has yet to get its Saving Private Ryan treatment, or at least if it has I haven't found it yet. Filmmakers always seem to want to make a statement about the war, rather than just portraying what it was like for the men that fought it.

Yeah, it looks like there was a The Things They Carried movie in the works in 2020, but not sure the status of that. I know that's a little "literature"/esoteric for some but I could see it becoming what we're talking about.

Matterhorn is another that I think is ripe for the next definitive Vietnam movie.

not saying any of these are the best, just throwing in some others to the discussion:

The Green Berets

The Killing Fields

Gardens of Stone

The Deer Hunter

Your comment is in poor taste. Jimmy was a real soldier who died in the service of our country...And his daughter was recently newborn when he passed

I had two uncles who were Marines in Vietnam. Both went through basic training at Parris Island (one in 1967, the other in 1968). Both said that the training scenes in FMJ were pretty spot-on for the era. They said that their DI's were some of the meanest sons of bitches God ever put on this Earth.

Maybe not the best Vietnam movie, but a little known one that is good is "Danger Close." It's a pretty accurate telling of the Battle of Long Tan.

“We We’re Soldiers” is a great movie

Is it though?

It is a great, great, great book (We were soldiers once ... and young.)

It is a very so-so movie with a handful of memorable moments.

The best Vietnam War movie is The Boys in Company C. Another underrated one that is enjoyable (for different reasons) is Tigerland.

Pretty depressing story, but you're right, it is a great movie.

The lead Cambodian actor won the Oscar and was actually a survivor of Pol Pot Cambodia. He went through all that only to be murdered in a robbery in Los Angeles in the '90s.

that said, the second half of FMJ doesn't get enough credit.

I agree.

It's really a great "descent into Hell" section.
