Why would a thread about the Oscars go on the poliboard? I think I know—this announcement is so absurd that you can’t justify it and might even be a little embarrassed by it.

So this would've won Best Picture in the 70's?

The Oscars jumped the shark when they not only nominated but actually gave the best picture award to Silence Of The Lambs which to this day I still think was a comedy.

I have not watched one minute since 1998 when they gave best picture to Shakespeare In Love over Saving Private Ryan. The single most idiotic choice in the history of award events.

A lot of that had to do with Harvey Weinstein lobbying for Shakespeare. I’m glad he’s in prison and hopefully being arse raped just for that alone!

You can kiss historically accurate period pieces goodbye..

Hell, I guess producers will just have to make movies for good old fashioned profit.

If they want to play this retarded game I’m sure there is some marginalized group they left off that list.

You can satisfy the requirement by making sure at least 30% of your production crew is a minority (sex or race) which shouldn't be difficult I guess. You can always make up BS positions if you need fluff.

Edit: I'm wrong, that's for only one category. This is beyond stupid.

After doing my due diligence and actually researching what these new standards mean, these new rules are nothing but a lame attempt to virtue signal. Just about every film that has ever been nominated for Best Picture, going back to the late-70s, meets the criteria laid out by AMPAS. A film that includes an all-white cast would still be eligible for a nomination so long as it meets two of the final three criteria:

- A diverse creative leadership and project team
- Industry access and opportunities for minorities
- Audience development that transcends race and gender

For example: Titanic won Best Picture with an all-white cast but met two of the next three bullets because it was filmed almost entirely in Mexico. Therefore the project team and crew were made up of a lot of native Mexicans.

I love shite like this. Hollywood and Sports are both racing to see who can obliterate themselves and their industries as quickly as possible.

One thing this idiotic pandemic has shown IMO is that people realize that they can live without sports and movies (or just Hollywood in general) a lot more than they previously thought they could. So it feels like both industries are on a very slippery slope with alienating fans and losing giant customer bases (a.k.a. money). So go ahead and keep trying to shove political bullshite down your viewers' collective throats. Once they stop tuning in and the money stops rolling in, we'll see where your priorities lie.

The Best Picture winner has been politicized for a long time, so what will be different?

Nothing. It's lip service. Actors began to demand inclusion riders a couple of years ago. This is Hollywood announcing each time they check a box. You won't see any headlines about major films being excluded from Best Picture due to a lack of inclusion.

They've given a start date to it and they've just lost a viewer. I think I was the only person on this board who was still halfway interested in the Oscars. It's not about rewarding art anymore if your film has to check boxes to be considered for a nomination.

I’m with you. I actually watched them up until a year ago. Never again.

Are Mexicans in Mexico now considered a minority?

To Hollywood they probably are.
