Maybe they should follow the guidance of the top universities and create separate awards for all of the minority groups, that way every group can be a winner.

I just love how much up their own arse Hollywood is that they're too stupid to realize this is illegal. One thing to require a part to be of a certain race or sex when it is a part of the story, but another to require your staff at large to be a certain sex, ethnicity, or sexuality. The Oscars are about to be sued into an oblivion over this. These idiots don't have the first bit of knowledge on hiring laws.

So an entirely black casted movie would qualify under these requirements?

No you aren't. Someone is about gloriously sue the Oscars with a class action lawsuit. These idiots in Hollywood don't know HR law. They think just hiring someone based on their race and sex for a specific part means they can do that in every which way and form in any industry. Some attorney is about to make a shite ton of money suing them.

I can't believe they didn't just make a separate award. They realize how silly that probably seems, but they want to force this?

I am all about diversity, but not as a requirement for best picture.

It's not about rewarding art anymore if your film has to check boxes to be considered for a nomination

Films already had to check specific and seemingly arbitrary boxes to qualify. Had to meet a bunch of film union rules related to personel. Now those rules extend to race, which will be a small change.

The fear when they announced that they would have new rules was that those rules would alter Oscar voting. The rules don't change how anyone votes, meaning minority nominees are still far from guaranteed, and this won't lessen the amount of films in contention, so... nothing is changing. People are going to stop watching the Oscars because the producers of a movie hired a Hispanic gaffer, a partially deaf caterer, and a black PA? Doubtful, or stupid if that's the case.

Why do people on this board only pull out the word "art" when complaining about star wars or inclusion stuff, and call anyone else on this board who uses that word in any other situation a pretension douche?

So I guess Lord of the Rings would not have been nominated for a single Oscar with this criteria.

Wrong. Plenty of local, minority New Zealanders worked low-level production roles. And it would arguably pass the storyline guideline.

Also, these rules only apply to the best picture category. No other categories. At all.

Reading the article helps. If productions only half to meet half the guidelines, this will lead to more interns being paid (one the guidelines). That's easier than the diversity ones, so you can bet that's what they'll start with. Are you going to stop watching the Oscars be interns get paid, which happens in almost all other technical, non-artistic fields?

Nope, Have to have a minority as a major member of the cast. I don't think the stunt doubles and the Haradrim would count in that.

Oh frick off. We know this isn't about the better treatment of interns.

And you think Hollywood is just gonna stop there?

Like another poster had already said, I still paid attention to and watched the Oscars. But this “checklist” criteria is absurd and only gonna keep snowballing. It’s gonna become a joke (but I hope I’m wrong)

Except they are not "hiring" people but rather setting criteria for being considered for an (meaningless) award. So I'm curious what the basis of these lawsuits will be

As in you can't require some substaff to be of a certain race, and if studios oblige it for the sake of the Oscar, then that's still fricking illegal.

Sooo......EVERYONE?

I demand more representation for persons of Italian and Cajun ethnic heritage.

Utterly hilarious for anyone to suggest that gays have been underrepresented in Hollywood production and writing staffs. Who the hell do they think did all the costumes and choreography? Difference is that in the past, they could get those jobs and those awards without having to tell the world about their private sex lives.

what law exactly says some organization can not have certain criteria to be considered for their award?

Please note its stupid virtue signaling but most movies probably already meet 2 of these, C says the distribution or financing company has intern or apprenticeships for non "cis" hetro people with dicks and D says "multiple in house senior executives"

Good luck with those lawsuits

outside of setting a quota for individual categories, what else could they do? And they could do that without setting a formal requirement anyway and frankly probably already have. Look at the last 3-4 best picture winners

I’m just shocked that you’d be here justifying or downplaying racial quotas.

Now we just need to hear from dawgfan.
