re: Best part of the Office is when James Bond figures out Jim is a lazy shite slacker in 5 min

They went full on caricature of everyone. But Kevin kinda got fricked the worst. He was always an idiot, but not literally stupid. And he was sharp in some ways (like winning a WSOP bracelet, for example). Hell, one of the best storylines to me was when Holly started and Dwight made her think Kevin was retarded, and it made sense. But eventually they made him actually stupid, which was a shame.

i struggle with what disappoints me more, what they did with andy or kevin. they laid so much groundwork early on that kevin was actually this legitimately interesting guy, but decided somewhere around season 5 that he was going to turn into just this normal dumb loaf. its hard not to like brian baumgartner but kevin was such an anchor in the later half of the show

They literally foretold this in Goodbye, Michael when he tells Kevin not to be a caricature. Like even used that word. So the next logical thing they did was just that. That's always bothered me about the show. They made a joke one time with Michael having no self awareness, yet the writers seemed to lost that too.

That’s what happened to Andy and why he became so hate-able. He was great as a supporting character, but after The Hangover, they forced him into a major role, snd the character (and more importantly, the show) suffered because of that.
Andy/Ed Helms should have been on the level of Stanley, Phyllis, Oscar, etc for the duration of the show to me. Once they decided to make him a star the show started going downhill. I actually mute of a lot of his shite when I rewatch and I completely skip the episode when he puts on his play. I guess other people liked it but every time he picked up a guitar or started singing I couldn't get to the remote fast enough

im and Pam were helpful for the audience to have someone to relate to, but they are not what drove the show.

Sure the guys weird and at the point of the show he’s writing jim up to hr but Jim is mentally torturing Dwight with constant outlandish pranks.
As I get older I empathize more with Dwight rather than Jim. When I was younger it was the opposite.

He’s surrounded by decent, salt of the earth people,
Phyllis and Toby are pretty much the only ones that are as you described. Kevin is weird, but clearly looks up to Jim - and Jim is nice to him.
quote:Nah. Jim had everyone over to his house for a party at least once. Did they return the favor? Jim led the Office Olympics - to help them past their humdrum existence.
but he’s constantly complaining about them and looking for reasons to not hang out or form any meaningful relationships,
Oh - and as noted by Pam at the beach - these "decent, salt of the earth people" basically all stood her up on the most important night of her life.

I know most people love Creed but I think he’s one of the worst characters on the show. He’s just too over the top unbelievable that he would earn and keep that job. Sure, he was good for some funny lines here and there. But then they made him a cult leader, thief, murderer, etc. good for a few laughs, but completely unbelievable.

True, but that was the end of S7. And Kevin had long since been retarded since then.

I kinda agree. But the scene with him and Dwight battling and one-upping each other to impress Erin was great: LINK (Best part is when Dwight goes "You're good.")

I agree that they ramped up the silly for the secondary characters as the series went on, and I wish they were kept reined in. But if I were to rationalize the changes in character, it's because it reminded me of the Loud Family documentary I saw years ago. In it, they behaved like a bunch of starched shirts in the beginning... but over time they eventually let their guards down, because they got so used to the cameras they practically ignored they were still there.
I doubt that's what the writers were thinking for The Office, but I guess one can argue the characters' "real" selves were what we saw later on, once they got too used to being on camera. If that WAS the writers' intention, I still think they took the levels of plausibility too far...

I acknowledge this is off-topic and I’m hijacking this thread (there should be a larger Office Theory 101 thread), but this is a huge gripe of mine. If you watch the earlier seasons, everyone was relatively normal save for Michael and Dwight.
There is a fan theory that everyone got Radon poisoning in the office over time and developed brain cancer, which led to their changing personalities. Michael blocks Toby from testing for it in an episode.

Radon causes lung cancer, not brain cancer though.

It's a silent killer.

Pussy is undefeated. Angela manipulated Dwight into that. Not excusing the behavior, but it wasn't his idea.

This is what always annoyed me about Jim. Every office has one of them. He never realizes his full potential in a career, but instead of taking steps to better himself, he just resents his situation and everyone around him. He’s surrounded by decent, salt of the earth people, but he’s constantly complaining about them and looking for reasons to not hang out or form any meaningful relationships, all the while also hating the rut that he has carved out for himself.
Isn't this the biggest compliment you can give tho that they absolutely nailed the character?
In the end we see the growth of Jim and that he ends up genuinely liking most of his peers. I think when you rewatch the show you know that Jim ends up being a good guy so you watch it through that lens.

They turned Kevin retarded but he still has one of the best lines of the entire show in season 7 in “Ultimatum” which is the New Years resolutions episode. This makes me shite my pants every time.

Right. If Jim has such potential and is such a genius, why wouldn’t he have left by then?
He did leave and was starting to give a shite but the Stamford branch got downsized. The only reason he went back was b/c he had started something up w/Karen. Had Pam still been w/Roy he would have eventually moved on but once she was single he was toast. He was too sprung to leave.
