If it qualifies as a "family/children's film," definitely this one.

Otherwise, The Dark Crystal.

When I was a youngster, the family would gather 'round each year and watch "The Day After." Good times.

Sound of Music

Probably the first movie that I asked to see again.

Back when the Wizard of Oz was only played once a year on network TV, that was a pretty big family event.

As a kid the non-animated movies I remember most (in no order) are:

Hook
Flubber
Bednobs and Broomsticks
Toy Soldiers
The Indian in the Cupboard
Sandlot
Homeward Bound
Muppet Treasure Island

I don't know which of those would've been the GOAT for me at the time - probably Hook or Muppet Treasure Island

Also one that I rediscovered recently that I was certain was actually a fever dream - Prehysteria..

Good one..Did you cry?

They literally showed it to us in the first grade as part of the class. A bunch of 7 year old kids watching kids crying while they have to kill their dog.

No one wasn't crying.

To this day I wonder if my teachers had simply never seen it, or were secretly sadistic.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is delightfully weird, at times terrifying, and filled with memorable set pieces. It's a truly great film.

Don't forget the sequel, where they fly over DC airspace, are unable to radio back to the attack craft and are blown out of the sky.

Or the Apple Dumpling Gang.

Can't go wrong with either.

Some musicals aren't terrible either - The Music Man or The Sound of Music.

My favorite from when I was a kid is The Incredible Journey (1963) Trailer on Youtube

Swiss Family Robinson (1960) is my second choice from my youth. Trailer on Youtube

I went to Where the Red Fern Grows in the theater with my freshman class at a boarding school. They cut the lights on way too fast when it was over. I hadn't had time to wipe my eys. Didn't want to wipe them in front of everyone with the lights on, so I walked out with tears running down my face. I got laughed at by all of the guys, even though they all had red eyes.
