He obviously made some great movies. He just isn't an action star to me.

Would you say Tom Hanks is an action star?

I'm thinking of the 90s mostly, so certainly:

1. Arnold
2. Bruce
3. Stallone
4. Fat
5. Mel

After that Reeves (Matrix and Speed in the 90s), Chan, Van Damme, Snipes, Russell, Cage, Brosnan, Smith.

Norris was dormant and Segal was on the way down.

The Patriot did suck.

But Gibson always had a great screen presence even in crappy movies - he was a true movie star.

Payback is his best movie. It's so good and nobody talks about it.

Get the Gringo was a great movie. I watched it on Netflix. I didn't even know it existed.

You know we always have a Rocky series ranking thread. There should be a Lethal Weapon version. Some people actually like 2 over 1. I think the only consensus is that 4 is better then 3.

He was my favorite action movie actor by far. He hasn't been in anything worth watching since the meltdown, unfortunately.

Mel Gibson is almost a classic cautionary tale. At one point he was a legit top draw; the Lethal Weapon movies were as big as Die Hard, but Gibson had more dramatic range than Bruce Willis. You wouldn't see Willis in an epic spectacle like Braveheart or The Patriot... and you surely wouldn't see any of the other action heroes (Stallone stopped acting after a couple of Rocky movies, Arnold never could act, and neither could any of the rest: Segal, Van Damme, etc).

Gibson was actually pretty close to Tom Cruise in the way he could carry many different styles of movies, but more manly than Cruise.

But then he lost his fricking mind.

Anyone who bravely takes on the Zionists in Hollywood is a-ok in my book. So yes, top 5.

This. If you think 2 is better than 1, you're crazy...Busey as a psycho villain trumps anybody.

...and yes 4 is significantly better than 3 and probably better than 2.

Apocalypto is a great film. I don't know why it got so so much hate apart from politics.

Passion - well Gibson is still laughing at Hollywood all the way to the bank.

Its soo hard for me to watch him now...but as an actor and director before his image was kamikazed...yes he was pretty amazing and his movies were good.

He chose to go it alone and made a mountain of cash. The majors in Hollywood ran from the controversy.

He may not be a top 10 or 5 a tor but he is a top 5 director for sure.

The passion and apocalypto are all time great movies.
