One thing I don't understand from the previews is why the aliens are using bullets and machine guns, shouldn't they have some high tech ray guns or lasers or something

oh well, i hope it's not bad as i will eventually go see it

I'll be seeing it sometime this weekend. Already know I'll like it since it's my favorite genre. For those that have been already, how was the Super 8 trailer? Extremely vague?

I thought in the previews it looked like they were shooting lasers and high tech stuff?

I want to see if they show the part that was filmed at City Park here in BR.

I hop this turns out great but I foresee it being like a 5th Element, Starship Troopers or Serenity ..

I hope it is as good as the movies you listed.

85% user rating on rottentomatoes, which is usually a little more accurate.

i saw it last night and i enjoyed it more than the people i went with. (sorry JBeam, it was a last minute decision with your former roomate and his gf and mine).

they do a very good job with the "wtf is going on right now" thing. the acting in this was a hell of a lot better than most of the previous alien invasion movies.

i did find myself constantly watching the background and looking for baton rouge stuff. They cut out the part with the State Capital they had in the previews, but i saw it for a split second. the part that was in city park was there as well as several buildings close to downtown on the east side of the interstate.

So I just got back and the movie was pretty good. Those who are worried about over the top action with no substance need not worry. The only "flaw" in the movie was a rather cliche speech, but it wasn't anything spectacular or out of place. I'm going to avoid spoilers until more people see it, but if you do in with an open mind, willing to be entertained, you will enoy yourself.

As a sidenote, the trailer for Super 8 was very intriguing.

Independence Day set the standard for alien blockbuster movies. Was B:LA more entertaining, less entertaining, or about equal to ID4?

Also did anyone knockout an alien with one punch after crash landing? That's the deal breaker for me....

nope they did not. and i liked it better than ID4 (and i watched that so much on vhs when it came out, the vcr ate the tape).

not nearly as cheesy and it only followed one group of people. it didnt switch back in forth.

Their weaponry is similar to our own, just more advanced.

Hell their military doesn't operate all that different than our own, and they aren't some superspecies. They are vulnerable just as we are.

BamaBenny - The Super 8 trailer is high detailed in the sense that it gives you just enough of the feel of the story, without spoiling it. It really does look and feel like a movie that Spielberg would have made back in the late 70's to mid 80's, only with a helluva lot better production values.

Alien invasion movies probably the best I have seen in about 20 years.

Independence Day is only 15 years old.

Eh. Can't really say. I enjoyed both for a variety of reasons.

ID4 was your standard big action blockbuster. You followed the HNICs in that story and you got the leadership perspective.

In this movie, you literally follow a group of average joe Marines. You are literally "in the shite" with them. They only have a general idea of what the hell is going on and we kind of discover what is going as they do, through their POV. It definitely shares some similarities with Black Hawk Down, so that comparison isn't that much of a stretch.

Oh and Ramon Rodriguez will more or less redeem himself in this movie. I almost didn't notice that this was the same curlyheaded internet hacker from Transformers 2 that was in this movie.

There is one "plothole", but as the person who I saw it with pointed out, there was an obvious opportunity for that event to have occurred off screen that would have made sense. Given that we weren't shown the full big picture of the events were occurring, I didn't mind not seeing it actually occur to accept that it happened.

No but you do get to see the Aliens up close and personal.

Also, Michelle Rodriguez wasn't typical Michelle Rodriguez in this movie. She even cracks a somewhat funny line if you listen closely during the action.

I'm starting to think that Hollywood is biased against science fiction as a genre.

You think it has anything to do with the location of the filming? I know they made it almost entirely in Baton Rouge and Shreveport- including post production and CGI.

Not that this movie is going to be good anyways....

Yep, I would have to agree since Independence Day was made a while back and has even been referenced in other movies ... but, for my money ... I liked District 9 ... that's just me

I liked it.

It was basically Skyline meets Black Hawk Down.

I did chuckle because going in folks said it seemed inspired by CoD....and at one point the commander turned to one guy/lieutenant and told him to dig in and not let the aliens past.

Thought instantly of this:
