pparently the run time is 160 minutes, that's a long comic film. It better be engrossing or it runs the risk of people just tuning out.
Considering all they seem to be doing with this one, it will need to be that long.
The issue is not the runtime, but whether it FEELS like a 2 hour 40 minute movie.

When Captain America faces a moral dilemma in Civil War, we'll have 3 films to base his reaction on, and even more movies when it comes to Iron Man. You won't need a bunch of expose or flashbacks, because we know who these guys are.
What about the slew of Marvel films where there was zero characterization prior to the film? Every one of the solo introductory films had the heroes facing a moral dilemma without any previous films giving you a backstory. This film has the benefit of Superman already being introduced and Batman as a character that everyone and their grandparents are familiar with. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man... the public had minimal knowledge of those characters and even less of a clue as to their origins. This film has two established main brands and secondary characters that are ensconced in pop-culture. You see someone named Alfred in a Batman movie and you know he's Batman's butler and confidant. You see Luthor and you know he's an evil genius who hates Superman.
Marvel had to explain Loki, Odin, Bucky, Red Skull, and those interchangeable Iron Man tech villains from scratch. This movie doesn't have that issue, other than Doomsday (and they seem to have simplified that by making him a product of Zod).

quote:Yes, they did. And like I said, Marvel has been able to build on that now. DC is just at the beginning stages, while facing a similar Marvel film with more established characters. I'm not comparing BvS to Thor (which came out a few years ago), I'm comparing it to Civil War, since they will both be in theaters around the same time.

Luthor will lose his hair by the end of the movie. Now if you want to talk about the fact that he's 90 pounds soaking wet and has no physical presence on screen, I'm with you. Although I have heard that he is one of the bright parts of the film surprisingly, at least from a performance standpoint.

Gene Hackman says hi.

Luthor originally had red hair and has had hair during various stages of his publication life. In almost all retcons, he eventually looses it.

What he definitely is not and never has been. Couldn't agree more.

quote:You can't be serious. I know a lot of guys that go to movies with their wives, girlfriends etc. A lot of these women know very little of the comic book world, they weren't into these things growing up. They came along for the ride with their menfolk, and are currently following things due to the extended story arc between movies. My brother's fiance, an attorney, is one of these women; she knows basically nothing of the backstories, but she could now tell you who is aligned or at odds with whom. She's seeing these movies because my brother is a youngish middle-aged professional who remembered these characters from his childhood, and is taking his family to movies now.

First problem- you'll have those that start wondering where Iron Man and the Avengers are, or the X-Men etc... after all, they are super heros too.
I'm confident that will happen to an estimated 0 people
The percentage of Marvel filmgoers like that is probably somewhere around 25% or so; that's figuring a lot of extra tickets.
You then have to take into consideration the Marvel series is getting pretty long, and these additional viewers (additional income) might say "ok, I've done your superhero thing, but I've seen 8 movies in return for you seeing 2 romances. I'm not signing on for an additional 4+ superhero movies that have nothing to do with the ones I've sat through, AND Star Wars, just for 50 Shades of Grey".
Remember, we're talking over 400 million dollars, the studio needs a lot more than just the hardcore fans.
