Trailer

The convergence of the French, English, and Native Americans in late 1600’s North America. Comparisons to “The Revenant” have been made, though Barkskins is a completely different historical setting. This kind of stuff is right up my alley.

One bump

Sorry, this looks too good to be quickly supplanted by a bunch of rehash Star Wars threads.

Wonder if there any mention of maritime Canada? Nonetheless, it should be a good watch, and different enough to be appreciated.

Thanks for the reminder....

They’ve got the revenant playing back to back all afternoon before the premiere.

A more detailed review with the ? news that this is only the first part of a planned multipart series.

Gasp, grab the smelling salts, they even dare to liken it to Game of Thrones.

Somehow I just don't feel like a leonardo diC look at history (so we'll just tape both.)

Do yourself a favor and find the 1991 film Black Robe, if you haven’t seen it yet.

It tells the story of two immigrants to New France, René Sel and Charles Duquet, and of their descendants. It spans over 300 years and witnesses the deforestation of the New World from the arrival of Europeans into the contemporary era of global warming.

Not my kind of entertainment.

We've really enjoyed this so far. I really like this time in history, though.

I like E. Annie Proulx but haven't read this book, yet. The book, evidently, spans multiple generations and like 300 years (following the two French indentured servants and their descendants' lives). I'll be curious if they want to do the same thing with this series or if they're going to mainly focus just on this French/Indian war period.

For those worried about the anti-colonial, environmental ("white man bad") stance, it's not really showing up in the series. That theme is, evidently, much more explicit in the book from what I've read.

First episode was good. I love David Thewlis especially in Fargo. It is nothing like the Revenant unless you are just going by similar (actually not even that similar)time periods.

I watched it over Grant Monday night. Watched the first episode of Grant at 6 pm last night.

I thought Barkskins was pretty good. Worried it may be too much soap opera with the men making plays for the women, but will keep watching.

Haven't figured out what the Turtle King is up too, but the way David Thewlis' character talked about him, he's going to turn into a Star Wars Emperor, or at least a Two Towers Saruman, who will do the bidding of a sinister character. He talked about going back to Paris, so he's a city boy at heart.
He may be waiting to spring some kind of city boy shenanigans on those Indians he's taken up with.
