“Banksy Does New York” on HBO

Just watched this documentary last night, it’s a great watch.
For those who don’t know, Banksy is the artist known for his crazy antics, including shredding one of his paintings seconds after it sold at Christie’s for $1.6M.
In this documentary, he posted on social media that he will present a new piece somewhere in NYC everyday for a month and leave clues to its location
The documentary follows different people that are chasing around NYC to see the new piece before it gets destroyed or taken.
My favorite one was he set up a “street artist“, selling “Banksy-like” paintings for $60 each. After a few hours, he only sold eight paintings for $420 (someone negotiated a 50% discount on two paintings).
The next day, he posted on social media that the paintings were real, original Banksy paintings. The paintings are now worth $250,000 each.
On another day, he bought a cheap landscape painting at a thrift store for $50. He takes it and adds Adolph Hitler (or some other Nazi) to the painting and drops it back off at the same thrift store. They sell it for $600,000. All the money went to shelters, etc.
BTW, the painting that he shredded at Christie’s, that sold for $1.6M, recently sold for $25M, still shredded.

That’s a pretty zany/entertaining way to raise money for shelters from pretentious art idiots.

His stuff is good. But it's just spray paint stencils. I don't see the value.

$90 bucks for paintings now worth $500,000?
That's a nice win for art lovers.

Pretentious, over-priced pop culture garbage for dumb rich people with zero artistic sense. Might as well be buying the crayon scribblings of Hunter Biden.

He does more then just graffiti spray paint.

I've seen his work. The local stuff was spray paint and stencils.

Which was sort of his point with the street seller bit he did.
When everyone didn't know it was Banksy, they passed right by it and paid like 60 bucks. When it was discovered it was Banksy, it was suddenly worth 100s of thousands. He thinks that is totally absurd (but still makes the money lol)

During these thirty days, he did street performance, sculptures, etc, not just spray graffiti

We watched it a while back and it is a good one. He's probably my favorite artist. Our cats name is Banksy. Fits perfect because if company comes over she hides and nobody see's her.

I've watched it a few times. It's a fun watch

Its a great doc and I love his work usually.
Its pretty ridiculous how people start cutting out entire sections of buildings just to get his stenciled spray painted graffiti.
Some of his shite reminds me of r/im14andthisisdeep however.

He's a really talented graffiti artist. They put you in jail for that.

Maybe. It's a nice grift he's got going on, a graffiti "artist" getting paid like Picasso. I find most graffiti to be urban blight, I don't know how this guy is some sort of genius.

he does more than just graffiti. And there's a message behind each piece he does. I mean look at what some of the other crap art that is out there that sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Stuff that is just paint splashed on a canvas or just straight lines and triangles mixed together that supposedly has some deep meaning. I mean Picasso's stuff is hideous and looks like a 10 year old drew it.
People spend stupid stupid money on art that looks terrible. At least Banksys is creative and typically has a good story behind it. His stuff sells for a good bit less than other peoples art. This Francis Bacon sold for over 14 MILLION. So beautiful right?...

He is much more than a graffiti artist, he has done a ton of incredibly interesting and thought provoking things.
But his point was that art value is entirely subjective, and the fart sniffers that give art its value are just the worst, he's pretty much said this in the past

Basquiat was just a graffiti artist turned artist. His pieces now bring millions of dollars. His paintings look like a 6 year old tried to explain their nightmare in a painting.
I like his work and am not trying to put his work down, but that describes his work pretty closely.
