Oh, and agree with the others about The Pacific. It is difficult to get through, especially after BoB. I've tried twice to watch the series, and didn't get past episode 7 either time. Almost every episode is so depressing. The only non depressing one I can remember was when Leckie hooks up with the Australian girl.

If you ever want to appreciate what those boys in the pacific went through read Sledge’s memoir With the Old Breed. The Japs were absolutely barbaric and the series does a good job showing the inhumanity, but as crazy as it sounds it still wasn’t brutal enough. The episodes where Sledge has nightmares brings tears to my eyes. I cannot imagine what those guys went through. I know both fronts were hell, but I’d have rather gone to the European front. The Pacific theater was on another level. So much respect for guys like Sledge, who went on to have a great life afterwards.

If you can find it, watch Germany, Pale Mother. It's a German-language film about a German family putting pieces back together after losing the war. It makes Saving Private Ryan look like a comedy.

Also, one of the reasons I think most people gravitate more towards interest in the European theater is because of how schools have traditionally taught the war. Once you start looking into the Pacific and what the Japanese actually did, (cannibalism, Unit 731, Nanking), it quickly becomes just as fascinating, if not more so.

If you're into occupation/resistance movies as well, Winter in Wartime was a solid watch on Netflix. It's a movie about the Netherlands occupation and resistance.

i wouldn't go straight into The Pacific just yet.

you'll end up comparing it to BoB, which will dilute the quality of TP
I haven't been able to finish The Pacific, and I didn't like Flags of Our Fathers or Letters from Iwo Jima nearly as much as Saving Private Ryan.

I do like the colorized documentaries on the Pacific, especially the coverage of the fleet, but otherwise I greatly prefer the European campaign.

Same.

Opposite - take the Omaha beach scene until "DOG-1 is open" out of the film, and SPR is kind of meh - not to disparage it, it had its moments after that, but never lived up to the promise.

The Eastwood movies are fantastic start to finish.

I liked most of Fury, but wish they'd made the ending more realistic. A handful of guys in a broken down tank vs a platoon of SS...
Nice action scenes, but it changed the movie from an alltime great, gritty war film, to something less.
I think, had they done the ending right, there would have been multiple Oscars for that film.

I love "To End All Wars" which depicts life in a Jap POW camp

quote:

Based on a real-life story, this drama focuses on a small group of Allied soldiers in Burma who are held captive by the Japanese. Capt. Ernest Gordon (Ciaran McMenamin), Lt. Jim Reardon (Kiefer Sutherland) and Maj. Ian Campbell (Robert Carlyle) are among the military officers kept imprisoned and routinely beaten and deprived of food. While Campbell wants to rebel and attempt an escape, Gordon tries to take a more stoic approach, an attitude that proves to be surprisingly resonant.
