The film is going to make a billion dollars as it's floor, end up at a minimum as the 3rd or 4th highest-grossing film since covid...Clearly people are going and watching it.

Is anything in this range besides Top Gun Maverick, post COVID?

that's part of the point, domestic and international box office has dropped over 30% since Covid, and there are signs it may never recover fully, or at least not for quite some time.
In 2019 there were 9 films that broke 1 billion dollars, in 2021 there was 1. In 2022 there has been 2.
Avatar's floor at this point is basically to be one of only 3 other films to reach that benchmark since Covid started.
A lot of haters are looking to try and find any angle to shite on Avatar, but when Avatar hits that milestone it will be one of only a small club of films capable of doing it, including all but 1 Marvel film.

#AvatarTheWayOfWater scores the 2nd largest Monday in 2022 with $16.2M and now sits at $150.3M domestically
Posted on 12/20/22 at 12:54 pm to RLDSC FAN
Of note, #1 Monday is Top Gun, which was Memorial Day.
Also did 36 million overseas Monday
LINK
So Global total is right around 500 million thru 4 days.
If this trend holds thru Thursday, will go into weekend 2 at around 650 million, 195ish million domestic(for comparison Avatar 1 went into weekend two at 160 million domestic, Top Gun: Maverick 205 million).
Also did 36 million overseas Monday

$36M MON OS. $349M+ cume. #AvatarTheWayOfWater
China - $62.3M
KOR - $27.3M
FR - $26M
India - $21.9M
GER - $21.7M
UK - $16.2M
MEX - $15M
AUS - $12.7M
Italy - $11.8M
BR - $9.8M
Note: DIS will probably be around $342M.

Minions Monday by comparison was July 4th IIRC

Ok for a 9 year old that has seen the new top gun and liked it?
BTW, this is the oddest thread in this forum in a while. You people REALLY want this thing to underperform. So odd

Avatar is outpacing my thoughts from yesterday.
I thought 15 million+ for Monday seemed unlikely, but if it pulled it off it might be a sign of some serious legs. Now that it happened, not sure Im ready yet to declare that lol
Need to see weekend 2, and the Monday afterwards, but people declaring Avatar 2's doom seem a bit premature.
A billion seems inevitable, the question is does it have the legs to make Top Gun sweat a bit? Take a swing at Spiderman?
I think no on the latter, but the former doesn't seem as far-fetched anymore

I think its the comic book bros in this forum, but hard to say for sure

For a supposed spoiler discussion thread, hardly any reviews or movie discussion is actually taking place.

I think the most vocal haters come from 2 camps:
1.) Comic book/Marvel bros
2.) The Scorned Lovers/Haters. I.E. Avatar 1 haters that never forgave Cameron for abandoning bro/machismo action and R-rated Sci-Fi to make Titanic and his dream project, then rationalized the success when they wanted failure by shouting "cultural irrelevance, cultural irrelevance!!" "The second will bomb!" They want to see him punished for not catering to their needs, but many deep down secretly want him to fail at Avatar so he will crawl back and make Battle Angle Alita 2 or whatever.
NOTE: There is a TON of crossover with 1 and 2.
My prediction for the near future argument: Avatar 2 didn't beat Avatar 1, didn't break 2 billion: FAILURE!!!

I mean he should, BAA was head and shoulders better than Avatar honestly.
But the rest of that comment is dumb.
The problem is people don't like Cameron talking out of his rear. Avatar isn't art, it isn't special. It's a hack of a film reliant on technology that no one else can afford on top of an extremely dumb concept with lackluster narrative legs.
He SHOULD be making better films, but he makes this slosh and touts it as some great achievement when he could be making BAA 2 or something closer to Aliens or T2. That's the sad part. It has nothing to do with machismo and everything to do with quality. Avatar is a poor concept in a poorly constructed world, and it's woefully inadequate, even if it is "popular" in some sense.
It's the poster child for "amusement park" film. It's vapid art.

He claims the comment is dumb then proceeds to embody the exact energy I was describing... lol
Congrats, you're in the scorn lover/hater camp, embrace it!

Am I allowed to be a bigger fan of Terminator, T2, Aliens, and The Abyss than I am of Titanic and Avatar without being labeled as a hater?

Sure, why not.
Avatar is just an ok film and a superb theater experience. T2 and Aliens are 2 of the best action films in history.
I think the hater threshold gets crossed when you are the type of person that despite swearing off Avatar is showing up to messageboards and topics on the internet rooting for it to fail or making multi paragraph angry screeds about how Cameron has personally offended you for being proud of Avatar and wanting to make them.
I love Taylor Sheridan's films, despite multiple attempts I cant get into Yellowstone or that universe and what I've watched left me underwhelmed. But I don't seek out Yellowstone discussions to shite on it or complain about how he's wasting his talent. I just go find something else to watch and move on lol

It’s going to be interesting to watch into Christmas. Also why can’t we discuss this box office again? Where else would we discuss it

I feel the exact same way about Avatar 2.
Arguably, if you remove Spider from the movie altogether, and cut 20-30 minutes from Act 2, and talking to whales, Avatar 2 would actually be pretty damn good.
As it stands, it's watchable and worth the ticket price, but it's not memorable.
