I was a little hesitant to start watching that movie when it first came on cable but certainly glad I did.

I watched it without subtitles and really didn't feel like I missed anything important. It was that easy of a movie to follow and the brutality of that time and culture captured my interest to watch it from beginning to end.

There were specific dialogue instances that played key roles, imo.

I had always heard it was not too good. I bought it when it first came out on DVD but then started hearing all kinds of bad things about it so I never got around to watching it.

It's Gibson's best film by far. The amount of effort he put into creating the Mayan world and bringing it to life was well done.

Don't forget that leftist media outlets hated it because it actually showed the reality of living in Mesoamerica. It didn't portray Native Americans as this super peaceful group of people like the liberals wanted it

Pretty sure they hated it for his drunken rant about Jews.

I’m sure it got downplayed big time in the media with Mel’s name attached to it, and the fact that it didn’t show the entire culture being Love, Peace and Pig Grease with each other.

First time I saw it, the village raid, I was just take aback.

I was just like “oh right. That’s how it happened. I would 100% be captured and hopefully enslaved if that was me. Just like everyone else.”

Do it, baw, it puts you in the jungle with them. I’m glad they didn’t speak English.

Incredible movie and an instant favorite.

…now can we just get the sequel that picks up when the Spanish arrive?

Well Jaguar Paw would have to travel 1,000 years into the future considering the Mayan period Apocalypto is actually set in.

But he puts smallpox and Spanish ships in there which makes no sense as it didn't happen until long after the downfall.

Apocalypto is clearly set in the late Mayan period, which is when they interacted with the Spanish. By that point, the decline of the Mayan civilizations and the influence of the Aztecs had taken full hold.

I know there is a relatively famous Youtuber who made himself look like an idiot trying to sound smart about this point, and I already destroyed it years ago when discussing the movie.

Is there movie magic? Yes. It's never claimed to be a documentary.

ETA: Also, 1,000 years? Seriously?
