Movie was meh....I did like the breakdancing scenes.

Clearly you’re thinking of the hit classic Teen Witch, and not Apocalypto.

Silly me, you are correct and I am not.
I meant to say I enjoyed the scenes in Apocalypto where Morris Day and the MF'n Time were on stage.

Gave Jungle Love a whole new meaning.

Well Jaguar Paw would have to travel 1,000 years into the future considering the Mayan period Apocalypto is actually set in. But he puts smallpox and Spanish ships in there which makes no sense as it didn't happen until long after the downfall.
Your mistake is probably looking at the Classic Collapse period as this “downfall” rather than the overall history which was a series of changes and downfalls of many different polities in different places over time leading up to first contact and later conquest.

Apocalypto is clearly set in the late Mayan period, which is when they interacted with the Spanish. By that point, the decline of the Mayan civilizations and the influence of the Aztecs had taken full hold.
I know there is a relatively famous Youtuber who made himself look like an idiot trying to sound smart about this point, and I already destroyed it years ago when discussing the movie.
Is there movie magic? Yes. It's never claimed to be a documentary.
ETA: Also, 1,000 years? Seriously?
Something we agree on. I really hate movie watches like him.
Same when someone tells me that would never happen when watching a fricking marvel movie. Oh yeah, wakanda isnt real either, did you not know that?

Crash won best picture the year Apocalypto came out. Gibson was snubbed in most categories, only nominated for makeup, sound editing and mixing.

I was mistaken, The Depated actually won. But I would say most years the PTB would have easily nominated a movie like Apocalypto had anyone else been the director.
“Tour de force” would have been the description.

I had always heard it was not too good. I bought it when it first came out on DVD but then started hearing all kinds of bad things about it so I never got around to watching it.
Looks like I may need to give it a shot based on this thread.
Wow. Legit one of my favorite movies of all time. But go into it still thinking it is not good so you're not disappointed.

I watched this at the theaters when it came out. frickin’ love Apocalypto.

I liked the movie, but bruh...running from pissed-off panther for 200-300 yrds, and even pulling away for a short time? Any jungle cat would have you in less then 3 seconds.

You could say that for most movies.

Pretty sure they hated it for his drunken rant about Jews.
Apocalypto points out how oppressive and awful the native empires were, in this case the Mayans, but the Aztecs were even worse, which is why the people they had subjugated rose up to support the Spanish. And why those tribes were so loyal to the Spanish, even to the very end. It's also an unabashedly Christian movie, although it's not over the top, that ending sequence with the priest on the beach, and the Spaniards holding the cross, they put an end to something awful, and brought something better.
It's no surprise that Hollywood and the media hated it. Everything about Gibson message is something they hate.

Natives the world over were pretty brutal. It's the natural order. There wasn't diplomacy between tribes just as their isn't diplomacy in the natural world. It's the ever present struggle for resources which will always be competed for.
Miss me with the Spaniard being some kind of altruistic
"good" influence

c'mon man.
Apocalypto is an awesome movie, and when you see it that first time you're going to have the feeling of anxiety/edge of your seat throughout the film.

You can. I just don't normally start by saying its one of my favorite movies of all time with most movies.

It’s definitely up there overall and at the top of various categories.
