Can someone provide a non-spoiler review? Can’t wait to see it, but there isn’t a theater within 70 miles of me that has it. Soonest someone in town will get it will be next weekend. Does it live up?

Will probably go unheralded, but I enjoyed in thoroughly. You have to have a somewhat open sense of humor, as the subject matter is obviously sensitive by nature. I absolutely loved Taika Waititi as Hilter, and Sam Rockwells character was surprisingly engaging and enjoyable.

Im sure this movie is not for everyone, it certainly doesnt exude mass appeal - its too smart, and too controversial.

Though it may be a bit slow at first, let it evolve. It definitely gets two thumbs up from me - a refreshing break from mainstream hollywood and all the conformity in film making that come with it. I watched it online since there are no theaters showing around me. Feel free to search fmovies or gomovies.

Hope you enjoy!

Just got out.

One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Not kidding.

Hilarious at times. Heartbreaking at others.

Overall heartwarming.

Really a perfect movie (in my opinion).

I can’t recommend it enough.

Saw it last night. It was fantastic, but the slowly staged release is understandable. Some people might take it the wrong way, but I haven't heard of any big controversies.

I think Taika Waititi (both as director and actor) struck just the right range of tones for the subject matter. All the actors did a great job.

Just saw it and wow. I really liked it. A friend described it as "sort of like if Raising Arizona was set in Nazi Germany."

I totally agree with the person above who said it's heartwarming, heartbreaking, hilarious. It stirs up different emotions from scene to scene.

Great movie. Go see it. The absurdist satire is clever and if you've got a sharpened sense of humor, you'll be in stitches. But it's not just a comedy; it's a well-constructed dive into deeper issues of acceptance of others and finding goodness in a time of evil.

Short, non-spoiler summary: a young Nazi boy finds he's not mean or tough enough to fit in with him Hitler Youth peers. He is sent back home with his mother, where his idealized notions of Nazism are challenged. I don't want to give away much more but it's a very unique film like Pulp Fiction that doesn't neatly fit into a typical Hollywood box. Just go see it.

I saw it this week and loved it. Like everyone in this thread says, it does such a great job of blending together moments of silly comedy, heartbreak, and uplifting scenes. It did a perfect job of showing the absurdity and silliness of blind nationalism/hate while also showing the real life devastating effects it can have.

Also, the acting was superb across the board. I thought the child actors were awesome, and it was ScarJo's best performance that I've seen. And of course Sam Rockwell was awesome. He and Theon were hilarious.

It starts off a little odd (I can't stand Rebel Wilson so that may have turned me off a bit), but picks up. Very good towards the end. Reminds me a LOT of a Wes Anderson film.

I think there's a very fine line between just the right amount and too much when it comes to actresses like Rebel Wilson, and I thought Jojo Rabbit had the perfect amount. I think she also perfectly fit the silly tone of the satire, so she didn't bother me.

That's a pretty good comparison.

Finally saw this one. I thought it was great. The satire and absurdism is hilarious and was enjoyable throughout. One of my favorites of 2019.

Absolutely loved this.

Waititi is just so good at creating this magical tone that has serious undertones and great heart but also just disarming and downright silly. Definitely has a Wes Anderson style though not quite as pretentious if that makes sense, and I love Anderson so dont mean that as derogatory.

Jojo was outstanding for such a young actor, as was the young girl, and his fat friend stole the show .

Waititi’s Hitler was so funny it almost feels wrong. Rockwell was the scene stealer as usual and Theon was perfectly understated in a quite funny role but not distracting.

ScarJo was outstanding and maybe my favorite role she’s ever done. She hasn’t been this glowingly perfect since Lost in Translation imo. Just a heartbreaking performance.

All around great film and experience.

Let’s dance!!

Thought it was great. The movie you see the first 30 minutes is not the movie you see at the end.
I think most people see the preview and think it’s inglorious bastards or a straight up comedy, and it really isn’t a comedy at all.

Movie was good, almost great.

I hated Waititi as Hilter. He wasnt funny. The story would have been much better without him, but I see he had to shoehorn something into the story showing Hitler as a buffoon because Hollywood crazies might actually think telling a story in WWII Germany is glorifying Nazis.

I loved it.

An awkward, lonely boy is unable to participate in he Hitler Youth due to an accident with a grenade (don't worry, this is in the first five minutes, not a spoiler). His only friend is his imaginary friend, Adolph Hitler.

His mother then arranges for her son to work in the local Nazi offices, where Jojo is further indoctrinated and develops a friendship with Sam Rockwell, a Nazi officer. Unbeknownst to Jojo, his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in the house. How will Jojo and his imaginary friend react?

It's a great premise and underneath the humor, it's a genuinely dark film. It effortlessly shows how easy it is to radicalize even a good-hearted little kid into something as noxious as Nazism. Go see it.

"I thought you were crying." - Yorki

"Are you a tear drop specialist?" - Jojo

"No.." - Yorki

"Case closed." - Jojo

The interactions between Jojo and Yorki are the best parts.

SPOILERS

The moment with Jojo and the girl when he confronts her with the knife after he sees his mom’s shoes is an absolutely heartbreaking scene. Probably the most emotional moment from any movie this year honestly.

It’s that reality that like you said runs underneath the lighter tone that makes it the whole story so incredible. Similar to Life is Beautiful in that way.

Like in the scene when the SS shows up and is inspecting the home. Stephen Merchant is hilarious and the scene plays funny, and yet the tension is palpable and most significantly the images in the book that he is laughing about are so jarringly vile that it reminds you of the reality that these kids were being indoctrinated to.

It’s a really difficult tone to pull off but Waititi does it perfectly.

Btw I was actually surprised during his acceptance speech last night. He seemed more off balance than I would have thought. Like he knew people expected him to be funny and he was trying but I think it surprised him how emotional he was and it all just seemed overwhelming to him. Was a genuine reaction of surprise and humility imo.
