Probably my favorite A24 movie. Might want to wait a couple of years though with the R rating.
Yeah, the movie is great, but I think it’d make a 12 year old pretty uncomfortable. I’m not sure if I could have enjoyed that movie at least until I got to college.

There's nothing in that movie that middle schoolers aren't already hearing, saying, or dealing with already.
I think it's basically a horror film for parents that gets scarier as you and your children get older, but for younger audiences, I don't think they would see it that way. The helplessness of the Dad, the complete inability to break through the damaged exterior of this kid to affirm her - that is terrifying to an adult, but to a kid? I dunno.
Maybe I relate too strongly to my own experience in middle school/high school, but for me, I'd have liked a touchstone movie that says: It's normal to not be happy, it's normal to be insecure, it's normal to feel alone BUT this is why it's important to seek out changes in your life to address those feelings.
And as horrifying as the Truth or Dare scene is to see as a parent, especially of a young daughter like I have, I think it's dead-on perfect in showing how pathetic sexual impulses can manifest themselves and how traumatic that can be for Boys and Girls that don't hold themselves accountable for their behavior.
Is 11 too young? Maybe. I'd watch it first, watch with him after introducing some themes, and want to talk about it afterwards. 11-13 is all about a transition from innocence to adulthood and it would strongly depend on what side of that transition your kid is on.

I always thought elementary was K-6, JHS 7-8, HS 9-12 (at least that is how it was when I was in school). When middle schools came along it was 6-8.
Anyway, Stand by Me and Lions get my votes.
Hook, maybe?

That is how it was here except K-3 was elementary and 4-6 was middle school, 7-8 jr. high and 9-12 high school. But now that I think about it, 7th grade was a real formative year because the 8th graders were cutting up, so naturally my class followed suit. Now that they moved the 6th graders to the jr. high I can't help but wonder if those kids are gonna be exposed to stuff a year too early.
As for movies, there are tons of decent movies for a kid to watch. With the exception of extreme vulgarity and adult themes, if I had a kid I'd want them to watch all sorts of classic films and all the really good new stuff so that they could potentially absorb the taste for great cinematography early.

Also, I don’t think that it is necessarily age-appropriate yet but Mid90s is a great movie where the lead is 12 or 13 years old. Probably better for him to watch after he is a little bit out of the age group though.
Night Nurses from Jersey?
Anyway, since we’re on baseball, there’s also Rookie of the Year and the Bad News Bears.
Flight of the Navigator was a favorite on mine when I was a kid. Might be a little hoaky now but I thought it was great.
You could always show him the Tim Curry version of IT. I was about twelve when it came out.

Not a movie but the Netflix Series - Stranger Things, which is in season four now.
"It's not hard to see why fans have taken so passionately to "Stranger Things," which borrows heavily from the era's most beloved movies including "E.T." and "Stand By Me."
Everything you need to know about 'Stranger Things' — the Netflix show people are obsessed with

Sky High is underrated I think.
You can also throw in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (movie is great but don't use it for a book report)
The Harry Potter Movies could be something for that age. Considering a portion of the series would fall under that age group.

Super 8, a movie just on the edge of jr high/highschool.
Lots of growing up, liking girls, hanging with friends moments, wrapped in a supernatural adventure. A JJ Abrams tribute to 80's Spielberg/Amblin adventures.
