My son is turning 12, which is a magical year in a young man’s life. He’s still fully in childhood except that he doesn’t play with toys - just sports, backyard games, and video games.

I wanted to create a list of movies to show him what’s it’s like as he moves into Jr High and things get more grown-up. This genre is called “coming of age movies” but when I search, it seems to be movies were kids go on adventures or it’s high school based. Are any movies based around the awkward jr high years?

The only we’ve found is a girl movie called Jessica Darling.

He knows every line of Sandlot. That’s a good point though, it may be the Goat.

Yes! Thank you! This is the exact kind of thing I had in mind. The whole struggling as you start to like girls after ignoring them for years in grade school.

Stand By Me is the GOAT

Eighth Grade is female focused, but it's so true to life it'll make your skin crawl.

Great list. Cinematic gems as well. I’ve been off watching the trailers. Forgot all about Secondhand Lions! Watched that with my wife while he was still super young. Can’t wait to show him.

I think Stand by Me may be a little dark for an 11year old. Adding to the list still.

Mud looks awesome. Had never heard of it.

Adding all of these, will see which he likes.

Wow. Great trailer. May have to save this one for a year but I want to watch it.

Little Giants baw. To be clear though what does Jr. High mean to you? because in my town jr. high was 7th and 8th grade (but they recently just moved 6th grade to the jr high) but I have alot of friends that look at me like im crazy when I say jr. high because they didnt have that it was "middle school" which for them was 4-8th grade. our middle school was 4-6th. I only say this because there is a huge difference in the movies I was trying to watch when I was in middle school and when I was in jr. high.

For instance, Eurortrip came out when I was in jr. high and it may be the best jr. high movie ever, that being said, it may not be the right choice for your son. lol

Camp Nowhere is also solid.

It was great growing up in the 90s

Probably my favorite A24 movie. Might want to wait a couple of years though with the R rating.

Little Big League

Also, I don’t think that it is necessarily age-appropriate yet but Mid90s is a great movie where the lead is 12 or 13 years old. Probably better for him to watch after he is a little bit out of the age group though.
