The lighthouse sequence was one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen recently. So awesome

This constantly took me out of the movie, but since the source of this is at a lighthouse... why didn't they just take a boat? Really, if they have a boat that can go 30-40 miles an hour, they could get in and out of there within the day instead of being trapped there.

Just got out of it, and am a bit confused, but not disappointed.

To the above poster, there is really no SJW stuff happening in this movie. The main characters just happen to be diverse women. I'm pretty good at spotting that stuff too.

Is any movie that isn't comprised of entirely white men going to be called SJW now?

You’re a nut if you really believe this, but I suspect you don’t. I would guess this is just another movie board troll of which there seems to be more and more.

i wondered this too, according to a guy on reddit, in the book theres only a specific point you can go through. if you enter from anywhere else, you simply fade from existence

i call movies on this all the time. this movie had 0 SJW pandering. Garland is no feminist advocate and i never once felt like he was trying to prop women up. its how the novel was written

Yeah, it's not SJWy in the slightest. Really I didn't know walking into it that they were all women since I've tried to remain fairly spoiler free. They just happen to be women and I think it works. There was never a point where I wished a man would be on screen.

i think im gonna settle on a 4/5 for Annihilation. Script wasnt as tight as Garland's other work, but man did he nail everything else. Felt like a Tarkovsky movie. Beginning and flashbacks were the weakest parts

I know garland is killing it with his films right now, but I wouldn’t mind him taking a break and writing another novel soon.

For the same reason they didn't use a helicopter

How many helicopter pilots are you going to have? Just put the ladies in a ski boat and I think they can figure that out on their own.

I think they could have at least mentioned some sort of weapons training for the women. Natalie Portman was in the army but other than her you had a paramedic, a communications expert, and a psychologist all going into a mysterious area where they had to camp out and carry guns. Portman was a last second addition so as far as we know none of the rest of them have any sort of survivalist or military experience.

There were several helicopters hovering in the background as the walked towards the Shimmer. I guess a reasonable explanation would be the shimmer would mess up the electronics. Why they did not approach from the coast is a mystery.

I keep seeing references to Stalker in reviews. Is it worth checking out if I liked Anihilation?

I agree. And that is not going to appeal to everyone.

I actually enjoyed this movie more than Ex Machina. I enjoyed the way this story was done. It wasn't entirely metaphorical like mother!, but there was more of that obscurity in this one. Especially at the end.

After about 15-30 minutes into the movie I realized I was not watching something that was supposed to be taken entirely at face value. Her and her husband get taken to top secret ground zero. She's able to just kind of hang around and meet everyone casually over some beers. Then they let her go with them on a top secret, national security mission? After that, I just started to suspend belief and enjoy the movie for the amazing visuals, well done horror elements, and for what it was trying to portray. I'm not even completely sure I know everything it was trying to portray, and I probably never will.
