I did not understand that either. I'm guessing reproduction of some sort was what was occurring at the end but the destruction of the shimmer and Kane s recovery I have no clue

Saw this today, pretty good but not as good as Ex Machina. The bear screaming in the woman's voice was kinda creepy.

I noticed a cancer theme running through the story. I thought the alien thing seemed neutral though. I don't think it was necessarily bad or had bad intentions, it just did what is was supposed to do.

I loved that there was no purpose or plan from the alien life, at least that could be surmised. It just did what it does. The end result was some very beautiful things and some very horrific things and some that were both. I think that’s much more likely if life from another planet came into contact with another than some invasion force or malicious plan. Makes it more realistic and horrific than an alien invasion plot.

I think it landed here randomly too. It was basically just space cancer.

I think the Collider article about being a cancer metaphor is spot on.

Yes, it was cancer. She saw her blood cells in the microscope mutating and growing like cancer. Unlike cancer, it had the potential to be both destructive and creative, thus new life forms were developing while others were completely destroyed.

I agree. The whole "alien" feel to the the experience in the shimmer was what impressed me most. I got the same feeling watching "Under the Skin"

Agree

I read where Garland said the film is about “self destruction”. Cancer obviously fits under that description but I think the overall theme is bigger than just a cancer. Lena cheating on her husband, the end scene where she basically has to fight herself, etc.

Well I just got out of it. What the frick did I just watch? I don’t mean that in a bad way at all, I’m just generally confused. It’s well written and directed, but I don’t know what exactly to think of it. I think I liked it, but I’m going to have to digest this film before I know what I’d rate it.

I liked it up after the boyfriend grenade suicide. Then I don't care for anything that happened afterwards.

Kind of disappointed. Not going to lie. It's SOOOOOOOOOO loosely based on the source material that it just took me by surprise. I feel like I might like it more on a second watch or if I hadn't read the book. Technically it's superb though.

The lighthouse sequence was one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen recently. So awesome

Time to order the books

Yeah, it is beautiful, and It honestly is a good movie. But man, it's so different than the book. It's honestly jarring how different it is.

Glad I didn’t read it in advance. Did Garland tell everyone that it was a loose adaptation?

Did you guys noticed the dialog delivery really off at times? So off or terrible imo it seemed intentional. Like the way they spoke was affected by the Shimmer.

He might have, but I just stayed away from interviews/reviews. The only thing I read was them telling the executives they weren't changing the movie to make it appeal to a wider audience.

To be fair to him, the book is so odd. I can't even imagine trying to adapt it. There are several big things that he changed, and the ending is wildly different.

This was a big fail for me. Extremely ballsy but a major misstep after Ex Machina.

The Fountain meets Prometheus.
