You never would have imagined that Rocky, a small-time uneducated hard working Italian-American club fighter, could wind of having the honor of being called the Tigerdroppings.com's Movie/TV Board Greatest Sports Movie of All-Time.
On the way to that award, he not only beat Apollo Creed, James "Clubber" Lang, Ivan Drago and Tommy "The Machine" Gunn, he also defeated even bigger foes in Pride of the Yankees, Miracle, Caddyshack, Bull Durham and Major League.
"It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”
Yes Rocky, yes it is. Congratulations.

Looks like that from the 2006 movie, and not the original Rocky.

You weren't supposed to look that up

Honestly, for several reasons, I'm a little partial to Bull Durham.
I also think that North Dallas Forty is in the conversation.

The only problem I ever had with Rocky is how bad he always Kept Paulie down. And he always discarded that notion because the truth was the only opponent that he knew he could not beat.
Paulie always went out of his way to help Rocky have a life. Even introduced him to a girl to help him lose his virginity, helped him find honest work, gave him food, invited him to holidays and gave him friendship when no one wanted to know him. He helped him train when he was just a loser..but he was still good enough for Paulie. He then pays his kindness and friendship back by desecrating the innocence of Paulie's baby sister. But, unlike Tony Montana..Paulie let's it go. He can find it in him to forgive this man. He wants to see good in Robert Balboa.
Then while under Paulie's guidance, Rocky gets a shot. Rocky makes it big. Thats when all the leeches come. Rocky gets lost in the fame, he forgets who he is and where he came from. Keeps Paulie around to rub his success in his face, which in turn fuels Paul's alcoholism to hide his pain of such betrayal. He knows that he should have known from that very moment, in which he was made to get out of the camera shot for television coverage of the first fight, where he allowed them to shoot..before he had even made it. (That was Paulie's meat rocky was beating btw...and guess who's check that came out of?)
Rocky then blows all his money after that first fight and taste of success, and Paulie is there to help him save face. He takes over his car payments and does his hardest to help him find work. He then talks some sense into his sister and pushes rocky to his now second chance..and sees it a cold living room as rocky felt he shouldnt be on television. He was at home, doing what rocky should have been doing.
Rocky then uses his fame to glad-hand and take Paulie's friends away from him. People barely recognize him in places hes been coming for decades. More of Rocky's torture, further isolating him.
Now as he reaches his lowest point he finds himself in jail..Rocky comes alone and then in cruel words, provokes him to a fight in a parking lot (after discarding the fake Rolex he gave him "never kept good time"), but quickly realizes Paulie can hit harder than anyone hes faced..so he plays it down and ends it fast before he gets really hurt. As he is broken emotionally..Rocky then makes him beg for a job. And even after doing this..he still defends rocky from Thunderlips, distracting him by giving up his own body and well being, only then causing rocky to get the upper hand.
Look back in his corner. Who was always there when Mick wasnt? If rocky would have not been so arrogant..if he had listened to and followed Paulie's gameplan, and did exactly what paulie said, he would have never lost his belt to lang. At times..I think he threw it on purpose just to make Paulie look bad. He then, knowing Paulie's level of inebriation..attempts to drown Paulie while training at a pool for a champisonship rematch. (That he clearly won easily when it wasnt "Just Paulie giving advice")
Paulie stands up to communism on american tv, and then goes to russia and to be on world television to help END it.
Rocky then blames Paulie for losing his fortune. Paulie allows himself to be used as a scapegoat. Rocky then desperately needs and wants the spotlight and fortune back and lives vicariously through another man. Rocky again forgets those closest to him..a dismayed Paulie steps in and begins training and spending more time with his nephew who has been having a horrible adjustment. Soon, Rocky's jealousy quickly ruins this new relationship and is challenged to a fight in a street by the new champion. Rocky only accepts the challenge after the new champion hurts his fist against Paulie's body. Rocky takes advantage, and ruins a young man's promising career.

I've climbed those steps.
Then a nice man took me and muh ladies picture.
And then he asked me for money...
I told him I would get some out of the ATM in the Museum.
I lied!

You're right...and I think it goes further than that. Stallone basically had Rocky and Adrian get smarter and more capable as the series went on. By Rocky 4, Adrian seemed like she could be some corporate lawyer, and Rocky seemed not retarded.
Paulie, on the other hand, was exactly the same as in Rocky.
Now, I happen to like that...because none of them should have changed that much. They'd have gotten wealthy, but in no way would Rocky and Adrian have changed that much. Of the many things which got silly as the series went ton, that may have been the silliest for me.

Nice analysis. I'm not familiar enough with the inner workings of the Rockies, but this is pretty telling on why you are wrong: You're all heart, Rock.
quote:
I know you're kinda busy, but I wanna tell you some things I never told you. I know, sometimes, I act stupid and I say stupid things, but you kept me around when other people would've said "Drop that bum." You give me respect. It's hard for me to say these kinda things because that ain't my way, but if I could unzip myself and step out and be someone else, I'd wanna be you. You're all heart, Rock. [Hugs and kisses Rocky on the cheek]
