On Legends of Tomorrow (not a show for you rules enthusiasts) their "Groundhog Day" episode was helped along by an anchored character telling the time traveling character, "Look, to save time, when you find me in the next loop, don't bother explaining the entire recurring timeline thing. Just tell me "Groundhog Day" and I'll know what's going on."

Yeah, I saw it more like Quantum Leap rules, where God/the Universe/Fate were resetting Phil's day and so could do whatever magic was necessary for him to keep the memories but not the physical aging.

Even Back to the Future causes some issues by Marty going back 10 mins before he left for 1955.
Marty ran what had to be at least 3 or 4 miles (probably more) from the center of town to the mall in less than 10 minutes.
Biggest plot hole in the trilogy.

Because one is consistent with every other part of the body and one isnt.
But that universe clearly isn’t governed by same physical limitations of this one. The rules regarding the body as we know it aren’t applicable.
quote:
I do ignore it because its not how it is. Everything that happens in the body is a result of the physical.
Clearly it isn’t. Phil’s body is destroyed in every way imaginable and is somehow restored by whatever the laws of physics present in the disruption allow.
It isn’t much of a leap to assume that whatever small percentage of the brain used to store memories can be accessed and saved while still resetting the rest to avoid the effects of aging and dementia that the thousands of days would cause.
Even in this universe the idea that happens in the body is the result of the physical isn’t exactly correct. We dream as a result of increased brain activity during physical rest, creating memories all on its own.
And again, you completely avoid the existential concept of consciousness , an awareness that exists independent from the limitations of the body.
In the universe presented, some existential force has to be accounted for as the loop doesn’t just randomly stop on a random day. It requires some emotional development or understanding by Phil or those in Palm Springs before they are released to proceed further along the time line.
What the mechanism or reasoning for how or why the disruption occurred or how these people were the ones trapped isn’t clear, but it’s also unnecessary to appreciate the story.

There are entire essays and books nitpicking these types of movies. Its fun.
I’m aware, and I agree

I am saying you made a rule that physical change is not allowed but the movies inherently did not.
Clearly you can have the physical change necessary for a memory.

You should read Recursion by Blake Crouch.

magic
Yes, it’s supernatural, therefore the laws of nature don’t apply

Yeah, Groundhog Day had something supernatural going on with it where it was about teaching Phil something to escape the loop. The science behind it is meaningless since it is a moral induced time loop.
Palm Springs on the other hand is much more based around science. The argument for the brain aging makes sense.

This was the movie i was watching when i made this thread, to be fair.

Haven't seen Palm Springs so I can't comment on it.
Have you considered the possibility that the entirety of Groundhog Day, from the moment he first goes to sleep in the hotel on the night of February 1st to the time he wakes up on the last iteration of February 2nd, is an elaborate, vividly imagined (but accurate) dream?

Worst ( imo ) example of this was in a Doctor Who ( Capaldi 12th Doctor ) episode where he was constantly getting time looped and could only remember fragments of his earlier self.
To escape, he had to punch through a barrier of pure diamond - with his FIST. 5,10,50 ft, millimeter by millimeter, day after day... I forget how many millions of years it ostensibly took, but it was beyond ridiculous.

I just viewed it as the brain being the only gateway to the reason for the time loop and thus it’s continued development was the key ending the loop.. akin to the whole thing being a dream.
