Honestly, I don't get the huge popularity of GoT. Not even from this perspective. Geek or not. But that's another discussion.
Have you read the novels?

I've attempted to start watching the series multiple times, but I just don't get into it. Is it a show that grows on you as time progresses and you watch more episodes or is it "either you like it or you don't" kind of thing?
And should I even try to watch the show or does the quality taper off (like walking dead).
Nah. I'm sure there are people who don't like it. Tastes vary by the individual.
I will say that the quality improves rather than tapers off. I didn't really care for the first episode myself. But in my opinion the show has gotten better and better. I've enjoyed all the books immensely too so I can't speak for watching it as a non reader.
- Friendly suggestion - consider getting a better user name. Names that start in numbers are usually hard to remember and hard to establish a presence with.

Nope. I'm right there with you.

Or True Detective, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos, Justified, Veep, etc.

Considering the genre of Game of Thrones, there are definitely tons of people who don't care to watch it.

I understand it if you don't like the show, but GOT seems to be a show with something for every adult.
If you like fantasy, it has some nice fantasy elements like swordplay, zombies, dragons, and kingdoms.
If you don't like fantasy, it is a very well constructed political drama filled with intrigue, plots, and funny one-liners.
If you like suspense, there are few shows on television that have quite mastered the art of the slow build up to giant waterfall cliff dives like GOT.
Also, the first season starts out really slow beyond the first 10 minutes of the first episode. Thankfully, it picks up speed big time late in the season and rarely loses that pace the rest of the series.

If you've already tried and don't like it you should just stop. I've been binge watching it the last few weeks, just 2 episodes left in season 3, and I've been really surprised at how well the story line progresses. Unlike Walking Dead, which I also like, there is no filler. There are tons of characters and tons of story lines, but each one is worthwhile and I can't wait to see how it turns out.
The storyline is fairly complicated, so I can see where the "you must be stupid and watch reality TV if you don't like GoT" comments come from. But some people just don't have the proper mindset to be open to certain things. Fantasy is the setting, political chess drives the plot, but if you don't like Knights and Dragons or political chess, then it probably doesn't have much appeal to you.

Agree with all of this...and:

Let us know what you think when S3 ends.

about 7 billion other people never got into it.

Walking Dead is Sesame Street compared to Game Of Thrones.
I don't see how you can get into it unless blood tits make you squeamish. I think you just refuse to start it because it's so popular.
That's how I am with that snoozefest Breaking Bad

Definitely agree, I love geeky things, but the whole Dungeons and Dragons thing I never really got in to
I hope you have not lumped GoT into just a D&D show. It is smartly written with very low fantasy elements. Hell the whole 1st season was non-fantasy until the end when you finally saw a dragon.

I liked it. Great casting and an impressive production. I don't think it's the best thing ever, but it's quality television.
Also, the fantasy genre....................I just love the fact that there are still people in the world with that much imagination.

It's not for everybody. I love it though.

Yeah, it's not even remotely complicated enough that it requires you to be intelligent... Look at the garbage that comes from daytime soaps with the multiple storylines and angles, hell look at WWE. Do they require intelligence?
People just like to make themselves feel better when they are not any better than anyone else for watching garbage TV.

I don't think those are even close to comparable. Usually the overly convoluted story lines in soap operas involve main characters you are very familiar with. GoT is constantly throwing out names of people and houses you may have only seen in one scene a few episodes ago. You really have to keep up with the expansive cast of characters well to not feel lost. That's a very different use of brain power than following a convoluted plot line where the main character is actually her own evil twin and the good twin is locked in the basement.
Convoluted because you have to manufacture drama for the same small group of people every day =/= Complicated because the scope of the story you are telling is epic.

I've defended BBT on here many times, I'm certainly no TV snob, I like what I like and don't care what the rest of you people think. But GoT is most definitely complicated and requires actually paying attention to enjoy unlike some shows that can be enjoyed in the background.
