Albert Brooks: Defending My Life
From stand-up to acting to writing and directing, Albert Brooks has been a major force in American comedy since the late 1960s. With testimonials from comedians, friends, family, and Brooks himself, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life explores the origins and evolution of Brooks’ career, the impetus for his creativity, and his enduring impact on comedy.

For Albert Brooks fans, this is highly entertaining. You can see that he can relax enough with his best friend Rob Reiner to open up about his famous father and his mother, and his early career. These and other topics that he's always seemed hesitant to discuss in interviews and documentaries. I've never heard him talk so much about his father, who was a famous film and radio comedian.
In our house, he's a favorite. My wife and I have Modern Romance and Lost in America pretty much memorized. The fact that he invented the "mockumentary" and predicted the rise and ridiculous state of reality television with Real Life (1979) is still astounding.

I really like Albert Brooks but I hate Rob Reiner so much I'm not sure I can watch this.

The clownfish isn't very funny.

It's astonishing how often I say this line.
I'll also occasionally sing, "The Desert Inn has heart."

The Super Bob Einstein Movie on Max is a great companion documentary to this Albert Brooks doc.

That's the first thing I think of whenever I see a Defending Your Life reference

I need to watch this.
Brooks’ father, Harry Parke aka Parkyakarkus, famously died just after he did his set at the Friar’s Club roast of Lucy and Desi Arnez.
He’d just had heart surgery and it was his first major appearance afterward. The whole thing just turned into a giant clusterfrick once he collapsed because people thought it was a bit when Milton Berle asked if there was a doctor in the house.

Big no. One of the biggest wackjobs I've ever seen.

My fav part of the movie next to the Broccoli and Pie scene.

I believe it is from the Friar’s Club documentary that I’ve seen, which I believe is called “Let me in, I hear laughter!”

I always felt like they told him to just be yourself for Taxi Driver.
He was Goldie Hawn's husband, that died on their wedding night, in Private Benjamin.
I really felt sorry for him in Broadcast News. I read his on-air scene where he sweated profusely, was his idea, after he saw some new guy on CNN actually do that.
I think he could have done some roles that Charles Grodin got.

The documentary reminded me how respected he is as a filmmaker.
The Garry Marshall scene in Lost in America is hilarious.
