Spader went from playing pretty boys with no conscience to playing ugly middle aged guys with no conscience.

James Spader. He was kind of on the outside of the brat pack in the eighties and considered kind of a nice pretty boy in most movies
I must have seen different movies. I remember him as the slimy a-hole in the 80s. Seems like he played characters more unlikable than Billy Zabka did.

I'm with you on Spader in the 80s. Less than Zero and Pretty in Pink quickly come to mind where he played a self absorbed no-conscience prick.

Doesn't really count because he doesn't act anymore, but I feel like Ron Howard deserves a mention for most impressive career trajectory.

Adam Sandler comes to mind
from movies like happy gilmore, billy madison, the waterboy, and the wedding singer in the 90s to movies like uncut gems, spaceman, and hustle
Hard to really call it a transformation though I guess, more of a transition. He went from over the top goofy comedy, to comedy with serious elements, to drama with comedic elements to drama. Kind of a similar path as jim carrey

Took my mom's Highlander into Karl Malone Toyota last Thursday. They had a TV on with a talk show with Jerry O'Connell.as one of it's hosts. Kiefer Sutherland was a guest. O'Connell said he thought Kiefer was 35 when they filmed Stand By Me. He said he was the most mature person he'd ever talked to back then. Kiefer has always seemed a little more mature than other actors his age. He had that laid back cool persona. Probably a byproduct of having a dad that played some famous goofy characters.
On the other hand O'Connell went from being a little fat boy to being the star QB in Jerry Maguire. He was basically an ugly duckling that grew into a swan. He still seemed in awe of Sutherland. Kiefer was there to talk about The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, but they talked more about Stand By Me.
Getting to see them on there together made sitting there drinking Karl's free Black Rifle coffee for four hours more tolerable. I went in for an oil change, rotate the tires and check everything. The brake pads had to be replaced..

Christian Bale - from dancing Newsie to serious and intense actor
Woody Harrelson - he was 23 when he started on Cheers as a lovable, goofy
bartender. He can play intense, serious characters now.
Kurt Russell - Disney teenager to many interesting roles.

Karl Malone needs to get his northside food truck park up and running. Need more than bojangles and Johnnys Pizza over there.

Wut? When was he ever considered a nice pretty boy in movies? He spent the entire first half of his career almost always playing douchebags, and much of the time skeevy douchebags.
I'd agree with him playing much more enjoyable characters as he aged though, but considering he played the characters you loved to hate before that, it wasn't a high bar.

If you'd told me 30 years ago that Woody from Cheers and Wooderson from Dazed and Confused would star together in an absolute masterpiece of a season on premium cable, I'd have rolled my eyes.
