Rick Moranis

I realize his disappearance from the acting scene was so he could take care of his kids due to the death of his wife, but I wish he had continued acting. Long live Dark Helmet!

For some reason Steve Guttenberg is the first person that came to mind for me.

ETA: according to IMDB he's still working, just haven't seen anything lately and he peaked with 3 Men and a Baby and Cocoon

The Boobie Miles breakdown scene in Friday Night Lights is fantastic.

He's still in the mix but it definitely seems to me like Orlando Bloom has fallen a good ways from his peak

He has a recurring role on The Goldbergs as the science teacher.

I've never seen any of the CIS/CSI shows and honestly thought that he'd retired or something. For about 5 years in the 90s, it seemed like he was in half of the movies that were getting released.

The last thing I remember seeing him in was Ballers on HBO

I think you have to put an asterisk by his name because he was, and to this day still is, in high demand.

Brendan Fraser, as someone suggested, is probably the best answer. And also the most baffling. Even his bad movies were making money against their budget and he just vanished until recently with "The Doom Patrol".

Classically speaking you might want to give the nod to Greta Garbo. She was red hot for several years but when WWII erupted it destroyed the European market, where her movies were in high demand. She faded away from Hollywood (which, by all accounts, she loathed) and retired.

Dakota Fanning is on The Alienist, a pretty awesome show with Daniel Bruhl and Luke Evans.

Haven't seen Matt Dillon mentioned.

Heard he became such a pain in the arse that big time directors and actors refused to work with em.

That was my first thought.

Mine too. Yes he left by choice, but he still faded as a result. Personally he annoyed the shite out of me until I saw Lucky Number Slevin. That movie drastically changed my opinion of him
