Actors who join shows or movies without liking the script

Twice in a few weeks I’ve seen stories about joining projects they have deemed beneath them despite having read the script.
We have the Ed Harris example. Then last night I was reading something about Rutger Hauer, who read a script, called it vile and pornographic and not to his liking, but joined the movie anyway under the impression they would rewrite the movie to do more for him.
What am I missing here. Why on earth are actors joining films when they actually have read the script and still don’t like the project

The obvious answer is money. Even Harrison Ford, who certainly should not need any more money, openly says he takes roles for the money.

Gene Hackman one of the best actors of all time did an interview talking about doing movies he hated for the money.

Paycheck.
People always think actors are rich and have the option to be picky. That's true for some, but most actors -- even the recognizable ones -- have to work to pay the bills like everyone else. Sometimes that means taking roles you don't necessarily like.

Alec Guiness hated the Star Wars script. He called it fairy tale rubbish.

It’s like musicians going on tour in their 70s. Most of the time these actors basically are the head of a business. They are the business and there are a lot of folks working for them that need them out there working and will push them constantly to be doing something to keep the revenue coming in.

Sir Alec Guinness didn't like the script for Star Wars. He did like Lucas and was told great things about the potential for the film. He didn't dislike the story or the big picture concepts, he just thought the dialogue was awful.
And he never had to work again, because Lucas (and this was big of him, frankly) gave Guinness part of his profit participation to recognize that a star of his stature was deigning to appear in this little space opera.

very few actors have the ability to just pick scripts at that their choosing.

I forget who it was, some young actor, I remember he said he was trying to talk to Harrison Ford on set about like the script and ideas and stuff and Ford basically told him some movies matter and some movies are paychecks so to not worry about it.

Didn't he think the story was ridiculous? I forget, but didn't he end up liking the finished product? Makes me wonder how many actors were completely wrong about the movies they were in, being better or worse than they imagined, after the final edit.
