Maybe they were and you just didn't hear about it. Which mergers do you think they should have been against?

Disney/Fox was not made into a political issue like this, particularly with the reddit crowd.

SAG didn't oppose that one while they are opposing this one

It was always going to be very clear that a fight would be put up because the Ellisons are involved

Probably because this one merges 2 of the big 5 studios together. Previous deals didn’t turn the big 5 into a big 4, at least not that I can recall. The OG big 5 were Paramout, MGM, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox and RKO Radio. The mini majors were Universal, United Artists and Columbia.

Today the big 5 are Disney (bought Fox), Warner Bros, Universal, Sony (which bought Columbia), and Paramount. The mini majors are Amazon (bought MGM and United Artist) and Lionsgate.

RKO hasn’t really been relevant since the Citizen Kane days. As far as I know, there hasn’t been a time where there weren’t at least 5 major movie studios

Didn’t Paramount put out Starfleet Academy?

Well, it helped that Fox News wasn't part of the Disney merger even though several people on this forum really struggled to understand that in the early going.

The WGA opposed it.

They did, I never said the outrage was rational. These people never are, they just want to virtue signal and divide. They don’t actually care

So why are we hearing about this one, over all others?

I just assumed it had more to do with there being one less major studio available for people in the film industry to work in. All 5 are doing the “modern audience” shtick

I was not responding with respect to this

I assume you were responding to someone else

Well, you heard plenty about the Disney Fox merger back in 2017 or so. As I already pointed out the WGA were very vocal against that merger. Several democrat politicians called for anti trust hearings and Disney had to divest itself from twenty something regional sports stations to get the deal approved.

not with this level of pushback, politically and throughout Hollywood

Were that the case, this topic would be utter nonsense. I know you need to "win", or whatever, but I doubt even you could be that disingenuous.

This is far more polarizing, and we all know why. Why pretend?

Ellison has a positive relationship with Donald Trump.

Everything associated with that one figure becomes immediately polarizing.

Look at how every decision made with CBS after Paramount acquired them was covered.

Trump-connected Ellison fires X.
Did Trump order him to hire Y?
Was Trump influential in the cancelation of Z?

Now it's "how will Ellison's acquiring CNN help Trump?"

I honestly don't know why. Why is this merger more polarizing?

the Ellisons are seen as being cozy with the Trump admin and people are losing their minds over the fact that maybe the content won't be so "progressive".

CNN being a part of the deal also factors in

Lionsgate.

There's reports that Disney and Netflix are both interested in buying Lionsgate. Don't be too surprised if they get bought up before the end of the year.
