They have been bad a recognizing good films forever now.
Alfred Hitchcock NEVER won a best director award. I mean how is that possible. They gave him a courtesy lifetime achievement award bc they realized how stupid they were and even he knew it was just a courtesy given that his acceptance speech was one sentence long.

John Ford holds the record for most Best Director wins with 4. His reputation was just fine with his contemporaries. He was nominated for director for one of his Westerns, but didn't win.
The academy member quoted in the op is an idiot, not because he won't vote for Avengers movies which have yet to be good enough for consideration, but because he publicly said this out loud. Why make people mad, dude?
And yes, I know that several Marvel movies are better than what is often nominated and wins. I don't love Black Panther, but I sure as hell like it more than Green Book. Many of the "respectable" movies are money grabs; they just aren't making money on the same scale as the MCU.

The Oscars are a money grab, by design. They exist to market movies that don't necessarily get the exposure of major releases, or that they just want to get more hype for. This is why they went from 5 BP nominees to 27 or whatever it is.
Of course, there's voting involved, so all kinds of random things happen, but that's the main objective.

But why not? Infinity War was incredibly well done. It took every bit as much talent and effort to make as any other Oscar movie. Top notch in every way. No, it didn’t have a woman fricking a fish monster but it was a great movie.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't care. He was genuinely a possessive weirdo when it came to actresses, something Tarantino has patterned his own self-styling after, and films like Rebecca don't give me the impression that he thinks highly of women.
But his films being overlooked only underscores the frailty of the Oscars. As recent activism has shown, they have more to do with backchannel schmoozing and political placation.
