But why not? Infinity War was incredibly well done. It took every bit as much talent and effort to make as any other Oscar movie. Top notch in every way. No, it didn’t have a woman fricking a fish monster but it was a great movie.

I'd liken Infinity War to RoTK, only in the sense that RotK was not the best film in the series, and it was not necessarily even a good standalone film. More than the other two it very much required viewing the originals.

Now, IW may not be as good as RotK, but it isn't far off. And it at least has a claim that as a pure cinematic achievement it deserved some recognition. This is why RotK deserved and received its award.

That was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. Right up there with A Most Violent Year in terms of boring.

We've been spoiled by too many fantastic space exploration films and series. We're not used to an introspective look at an astronaut.

"First Man should have been nominated for Best Picture — it probably came in ninth or tenth — and its visual effects are pretty amazing. I think they were produced more on a stage — with models and old-school stuff — than the other nominees', which relied more on CGI, and I really respect that. There's just no way on earth that I will ever vote for anything with the word Avengers in the title; like a lot of people in the Academy, I don't respect money-grabs."

Because I think writing is the most important attribute in a film - the thing that determines the emotional depth of the performances more than the actors or the director.

Infinity War was a niche film that was very forgettable to non-Marvel fanboys; the heft of the story was carried by the investment of the audience in the wider Marvel universe moreso than anything contained in the movie itself.

Just among nominees, BlacKKKlansman, The Favourite, Roma, and A Star is Born would be easy votes for me over Infinity War in all major categories.

Probably would have voted for Annihilation, Isle of Dogs, Eighth Grade, and Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse over it as well.

I think the comparison Freauxzen made to ROTK was apt, as I thought that movie got a bunch of underserved awards in an incredibly stacked year (Lost in Translation, Mystic River, and Master and Commander all being bona fide classics) while Fellowship got inexplicably passed-over in a much weaker year.

Didn’t Birdman win best picture? And it was basically Hollywood circle jerk celebrating this very attitude.

Maybe because they all knew he was a rapist.

Roman Polanski is still celebrated in Hollywood

He raped a 13 year old girl.

Less and less. This year's parade was down to two character balloons and the Chinatown balloon is on its last legs.

tend to agree with the director; Avengers movies - and cheap popcorn flicks in general - generally shouldn't even be included in the discussion of "Best Picture" films. I don't understand what's controversial about what he said.

Because those movie bankroll Hollywood and all the stupid films they love to brag about. First Man was shite yet it get love. Avengers was entertaining and make money, yet it is not worthy of praise.

Just because it made lots of money doesn’t mean shite. Same people who are crying over the avengers are the same who cry when popular music at the top of the charts receive praise

First Man received 4 Academy nominations, none in the major categories. It won 1 for its visual effects, which were impressive. The sound design and sound effects of First Man were incredible. IW received one nomination and lost to First Man. It was slightly less-well reviewed than First Man.

I don't know why we're talking about First Man as if it is beloved just because some random voter name-dropped it. He obviously felt strongly about the movie, but it was a financial disappointment. It was not one of the best-reviewed films of the year. Its highest praise received was for Claire Foy, whose character many said was ultimately wasted. She wasn't nominated for an Oscar, as many predicted she would be.

??? IWho's complaining about popular music these days? We have avenues other than the radio to discover good stuff. I never have to hear a song I don't like unless I'm in a restaurant or bar, where I'm not typically listening. Get Spotify, bro.

I think most people would agree Avengers films aren't best picture material. I think it's his pretentious attitude (don't respect money grabs, lol) that makes people roll their eyes.

Making shite-tons of money on extremely entertaining movies like the Avengers is how they can afford to make nothing on neo noir silent films about a homeless man's deep admiration of new shopping carts.
