re: 6 Reasons Billy Eichner’s ‘Bros’ Was A Box Office Disaster • Forbes' Scott Mendelson

Add to the list: People don't like Billy Eichner.
My wife's brother is gay. He's married, gainfully employed, Christian, pro-life and pro-family, didn't vote for Biden, feels drag queens have no place around children...you get the picture. He and his husband went to see Bros over the weekend and both were very disappointed. They felt that it was way too preachy for mainstream audiences and both said that Billy Eichner's character is terribly unlikable. The other lead, Luke McFarlane, apparently is sweet, goofy, and lovable. He also said that they tried way too hard to check all of the diversity boxes.
Straight audiences don't automatically hate movies with gay leads. I'd be willing to bet that most people didn't even know that Luke McFarlane is really gay. He's made so many Hallmark movies where he plays the straight love interest. He's not an in your face, screaming gay man like Eichner is.

I wish there was a way to short the market on movies like this. A blind man could see this flop coming.

I'm sure someone has found/ will find a way to create a derivative for this.

There’s a reason many of the rom coms recently have opted for streaming releases, people aren’t paying movie prices to see them…whittle that audience down even further for those interested in a gay one and well how did they not see this coming ?

yeah and billy eichner obviously lives in his ShowBiz Bubble and has zero idea how much he sucks

I didn't want a new thread. They had a $30,000 arse puppet for a sex scene. LINK

Billy Eichner
His tweets towards straight people about the movie leading up to the release probably didn't help.

I mean, Asians make up roughly the same percentage as gay people, and Crazy Rich Asians killed it at the box office. How about you make a good movie and not a lecture?
This is fair. I also didn’t know shite about this movie until I started seeing articles about it.
That said, I saw a trailer for Spoiler Alert coming out in December and I will go to the theater to watch it.

• It was ‘just’ the first mainstream gay theatrical rom-com.
This is false. Brokeback Mountain says high, that movie also made 98 million us.

Yeah, people like Dan Levy. I bet in the least it probably would have grossed another two million if Dan Levy were instead the star. I don’t know anyone who really likes Billy Eichner.
I bet 95% of the population doesn’t know who either one is

Broke back mountain was a comedy?
Rom-com means Romantic Comedy.
There have been plenty of gay centric dramas.
The Crying Game was the first one with people proud to be out that I remeber. Even though I haven't seen it.

quote:Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, Neighbors, etc.) is the director. I don't recall him making any controversial comments, so I'm assuming you're talking about Eichner.
Director shites all over flyover states and conservatives and then wonders why they don’t want to see his big gay movie
In fact, as the article points out, one of the big problems was that they failed to point out that this was from the director of those comedies that are pretty popular. I didn't know until Eichner's meltdown when I looked the film up.

quote:I think Dan Levy is recognizable though. In fact, I think it's a lot like his father is recognizable. Plus Schitt's Creek has a lot of gifable moments, so you see a lot of gifs with Dan, Alexis, and Moira even if people don't know who they are (obviously Catherine O'Hara as already pretty well-known).
I bet 95% of the population doesn’t know who either one is

I think he meant Adam McKay "shitting obey flyover" America.

• Bros lacked bankable movie stars.
I had no clue who Billy E was until he went on Pardon My Take the day before the movie came out

Marketing and publicity sold importance over entertainment.
And the only marketing I ever saw for it was via Pardon My Take. Seems like the issue is at the feet of the marketing and advertising teams. They did a really shitty job if someone like me, a perpetually online and watching the TV kinda guy, has no clue about a movie until 12 hours before it comes out.
