Well let’s see Smash 1998? Yeah, we sucked that’s what we were complaining about, what are you like 18? And I’d take anything over the Shitshow CFB has become.

College Football 25 years ago was awesome.

The way they determined the champion might not have been the best but the post season was so much fun

What are you even trying to say? That we didn't suck in the 90's? I remember being absolutely fired up to watch LSU play Notre Dame in the independence bowl.

I absolutely can't wait for a CFB 12 team playoff.

I'd take today. 25 years ago a good QB had a 135 passer rating with 60% and 20 TDs and 15 INTs. Today is much better QB play.

The question was directed to LSU fans but the scope is far broader.

FTR, '98 was a bummer. Pre-season top-10 with Herb and Faulk. But DiNardo hired Tepper to replace Carl Reese as DC. That was the gold standard of DC debacles until Malleveto and then Pelini II and now House.

But although we had a down season, the CFB game was better.

Absolutely not

Downvote away. But it's simple minded LSU fans who have catastrophe syndrome bc they don't like the way things sit for LSU today.

LSU is in a MUCH better spot now than they were 25 years ago.

the college game on the other hand, is not.

What separated CFB from pro ball was tradition and identity, i.e., "my school, my team, my players."

All things still present unless you CHOOSE to look at it negatively. My school is still LSU. Its traditions that matter are the same. The players in purple and gold, no matter where they played last year, are still “my players.”

If none of that is true to you, then why still watch?

Maybe you can elaborate on why you think it's better now.

I’m saying it’s not worse, at least to the point of being constantly salty about it. I still love this team and school, I don’t care about anything else. We have a game tomorrow. I’m excited about it. I’m not moping about the circumstances surrounding it.

Yep

I think the biggest problem is NIL.

It’s here to stay, but there must be some controls and limits.

Even the NFL has a salary cap.

This will also reign in the out of control transfer portal.

Transferring to get more playing time or better coaching is one thing, but transferring for more money is hurting the game.

Also I think the offensive game is out of control.
I know we were the worst defense of all time

But even really good defenses are giving up a boatload of points.

They need to change the linemen downfield rule to mimic the NFL.

Seems like it’s the turds of today’s generation that are always looking for instant gratification but then throw little bitch fits when things don’t go their way. Kind of like a spoiled, bratty, petulant child that needs to be slapped across the mouth every so often and told that they live in a fantasy world. In other words, todays generation is mostly what’s wrong with this country.

25 years ago, the highest paid coach (Spurrier) barely cleared $1M a year. Everyone brings up a ton of things that have changed about college football, but that one is huge and rarely mentioned.

Playoff hasn’t solved anything. It’s somewhat diluted the regular season and made the bowls irrelevant, for the most part. We bitched about computers and now we have English majors from Des Moines Tech putting teams in because of “the eye test”. I did t mind winning the sec, going to the sugar and letting the stupid press fight it out. Hell, we “split” with usc in 2003. Did that/Does that take away from your fan pride? No. We’re still national champs in my book. You can split it 7 ways if you want. I miss the old bowl system and New Year’s Day. It was never about a true champion. It’s a way for ESPN to have more games, more viewership, more money. If they could expand to 24, they would.

Would take 25 years ago in a heartbeat. HS players choosing where they wanted to go because they loved the school or wanted to go play and win somewhere and wait their turn.

Ole Miss hasn’t won anything in 70 years which proves the athletes didn’t want to go there. Now with NIL and the transfer portal they will have a chance to win because it’s NFLjr now.

It’s like being ugly and never dating a hot woman then getting 20 Million from your uncle and picking up hot women and thinking it’s because you go more attractive.

I much preferred the game 25 years ago. It was more regional and talent seemed to be a distributed a bit more evenly.

UW regularly crushed OSU and Michigan, went to Rose Bowls and stomped on PAC10 dicks.

And shoulder pads were fricking shoulder pads.

Do you still cheer Walker Howard on? Are UF fans still Etienne fans? They were just weeks back.

There is something fundamentally different about today's CFB game that transcends fans' choices.

the game will always be popular but it's definitely lost me

all the things I loved about it are either dead or dying

I'll still watch of course, but more casually than ever

Because it wasn’t always about winning the national title. Have a good season, win your conference, play and or win a major bowl. Most everyone was happy.
