re: Would you had rather seen Kerry Wood’s 1-hit, 20K game or Edwin’s 149 pitch, 8 walk no-no?

This should be a no-brainer. Wood’s 20 strikeout game was the greatest game ever pitched.

Wood was a fantastic pitcher and really fun to watch.

I think a guy named Tom Kennedy struck out 21 in 16 innings once.

It's way more exciting to watch a guy racking up K's because he's dominating than a guy who might be pitching average but just hasn't given up a hit.

Woods, and it isn't even close. To watch a pitcher dominate in that fashion would be a site to see. It is something that really is not appreciated in today's sports.

I watched the documentary on the 20-strike out game and they bring up some SO where the ball was a little off the plate...
And Wood says: yeah there were like 4-5 questionable strikes but it's not like I was getting a Maddux or Glavine strikezone.
I always wondered what other pitchers during that era thought about the Braves pitchers who seemed to get everything a foot off the plate as long as the catcher framed it. Leo Mazzone; he figured out how to game the umps.
I think that comment by Wood seems to be that other pitchers resented the favorable treatment the Atlanta pitchers got. Maybe it's why the team would underperform in the playoffs because the strikezone was tightened up except when they played at home.

He didn't need much help that day.

Off the plate.
As Woods was alluding to, shite I can throw balls all day...
But for some reason if those balls are consistently thrown at the same spot, they're now called strikes, even though, they're still just regular balls.
Apart from that it was refreshing to hear a contemporary like Woods quietly admit and say it in a way that seems every pitcher was saying it...yeah those guys gamed the system and got the widest strikezone in the game for a decade.
Even the Ump in the Kerry Wood game said, that was the game sort of back then and that's why there was this backlash with Umps.
If you framed a pitch a foot off the plate and hit the mark even though the batters bat couldn't reach it...Brave's pitchers got the strike...and Braves coaches taught their pitchers to basically never throw strikes. Just hit the target that can't be hit. Maddux became unhittable only after he left the Cubs because he was with Mazzone.
I don't know why command trumped an actual pitch over the plate.
It's like the Braves got away with the Livian Hernandez strikezone for a decade and everyone complains about Eric Gregg.
But it was refreshing to see what other pitchers and still to this day think about those Braves pitchers.

I saw Woods' game live on TV. His breaking pitches were mean to watch even on TV that day. Most of the time, due to distance and camera angles, the break is sort of subdued when seen on TV. That day the ball looked like it was breaking at a sharp angle instead of a smooth curve.

20 Ks please. Pure dominance
The Edwin Jackson thing is neat for the absurdity of it, but there have been a decent amount of mediocre no hitters

I had to listen to the Kerry Wood game on WIBR-AM, then after the game hear Ronnie Rantz brag about it on his afternoon show.
I called in and reminded him WIBR was an Astros' affiliate.
