Arnie in his prime,

Palmer last won a major in 1964… Jack continued winning until the 80s. He played inferior competition to Tiger.

Arguing Jack over Tiger is like arguing Bill Russell over Jordan.

Which Michael Jordan is the clear winner in that argument lol

So, if Jack and Tiger were in their primes with the same equipment, who is better? How would they do in their prime with today's tour and courses?

Like Tiger.

Jack Nicklaus won 18 majors in 164 starts. Tiger Woods won 15 majors in 87 starts.....against a MUCH more competitive international field. He's also won the same amount of tournaments as Sam Snead making probably half as many starts. Hang your hat on 18 if you want but nobody was more dominant that Tiger Woods from 1997-2013.

I know y’all old folks think it’s close but it’s really not. Tiger Woods changed the game, while having 82 PGA wins (9 more than Jack). Not to mention part of his prime was taken away.

What do you think Jack and Arnie did? Tiger definitely brought golf to another level, but that doesn’t make him the greatest. And, in most people’s book you get credit for staying healthy, not credit for being injured.

Over the course of an entire Tour schedule, Tiger would win more than Jack would. When healthy, Tiger won at a higher rate than anyone in history. That wouldn’t change.

Except Nicklaus had to contend with Arnie in his prime

No he didn't. Palmer was quite a bit older than Jack. Once Jack hit his prime, Palmer was more or less done with his. Palmer also had a marginally better career than a guy like Phil. Palmer won 7 majors in his career, all between 1958-1964. Jack won his first major in 1962 and his last in 1986. Phil won 6 majors, with his first coming in 2004 and his last coming in 2021. Tiger won his majors from 1997 through 2019. Comparing the overall fields, the fields during Tiger's prime were much deeper. Even Jack has said this. And the fields now are even deeper than they were when Tiger was in his prime. Players didn't get rich being professional golfers when Jack was playing like they do now, so it wasn't as enticing of a career choice like it is now for athletes. And the credit for the money involved in golf now lays at Tiger's feet

He showed you 142 straight made cuts. That’s as impressive. Ask any professional

His swing was always going to break his body down. Many said during his career the tourque on his back and knees would eventually lead to exactly what it lead to. So imo. No.

It broke down because when you use steroids, the muscles are tighter and break down. Both he and duval are perfect examples of this.
Tiger did roids. My friend was on PGA for several years and it was very well known in the clubhouse...basically openly spoken about

The swing had a lot to do with it. The first time Couples saw Tiger swing he predicted that his back would go. He is now at 5 back surgeries.

Jack won his 18th major in his 101st start. Most of the rest of those major starts came after he was 50 and was mainly playing on the senior tour. Tiger won his last major in his 84th start. That means that they both won, through that point, one out of every 5.6 majors they played.

The difference is that in those starts Jack finished second 19 times, Tiger finished second 6 times.

If you look at the list of the golfers with the most major championships 4 of Nicklaus contemporaries —- Watson, Player, Palmer and Trevino —- appear before the first of Tiger’s contemporaries (Phil).

It is not a cut and dried argument in favor of Tiger. Jack’s record in majors remains unparalleled.

So had Tiger not mentally/physically broken down late in his career he probably catches Jack. But if a frog had wings……….Jack is better.

Tiger himself set up Jack's record for winning majors as the one to beat.
He failed. But still the best of his generation.

The Tiger had a bad back excuse is so stupid.

Jack had a bad back.
All golfers have a bad back, from golfing.

If he had never met Sean Foley he would have tied Jack in the major column.

Sean Foley’s method is a disaster and killed any chance for Tiger. Butch or Haney would have gotten him there.

Nicklaus would boat race him. And with the modern equipment boat race further.
