Oh noz.

quote:

The champion and protector of the Women’s National Basketball Association, David Stern, will retire in February 2014. He has been the all-powerful commissioner of the NBA for three decades. It is hard to imagine how the WNBA could have survived without his support, and that will soon be gone. The league was founded in 1996, and currently has 12 teams. Six teams have disappeared since the league’s beginning, and three have been relocated. Attendance has been awful. Average regular season attendance by team per game was only 7,457 in 2012, compared to about 18,000 for the NBA. The WNBA attendance number was below 6,000 in Atlanta, Chicago and Tulsa. Even in New York City, the New York Liberty could not break the 7,000 barrier. Attendance for half of the teams dropped by double digits between 2011 and 2012. Owners have little financial reason to support the league. The Chicago Sun Times reported in 2011 that “The majority of WNBA teams are believed to have lost money each year, with the NBA subsidizing some of the losses.” TV viewership is so low it only makes matters worse.

Only way it could possibly work is if the teams are in cities like Storrs, Knoxville, etc. where the local university has a strong WBB tradition. Then each team gets the local favorites.

So Baton Rouge (as an example) would have a team with Seimone Augustus, Tameka Johnson, etc. The current model clearly isn't working. Even the 11-13 year old girls (main target demographic) aren't going to the games.

Pretty sure the players make way more $$$ in the Euroleagues than they do in the WNBA. But as one of the few people in nation who has been to multiple WNBA games its going to suck not being able to kill 3 hours at the MSG for $15

7500 people show up for an average WNBA game? Seriously? I can't even fathom somebody asking me if I want to go to a WNBA game. I'd assume they were joking.

I watch the wnba just as much as I watch the nba and college basketball. Not at all. It won't be missed.

They never have. The reason they support it is to avoid the wrath and outrage of all sorts of feminist, "progressives" and bellyachers, when financially it makes 0 sense for them subsidize crap that there isn't a market for.

Not really. There was already an independent league, the ABL. The NBA could easily have stayed out of the way.

They just subsidized the WNBA to kill off the competition, just in case WBB ever became profitable on the pro level.

You have a gambling problem if you are betting on the WNBA.

I picked WNBA winners at 61% last season... it's a gold mine if you do your research
