With NIL, is it better to get 3-4 stars to develop/stick than 5 stars looking for payday?

Just thinking that its more important than ever to build a culture that will develop a TEAM. You need 5 star talent, but if they come in and don't start right away, they can easily bolt to another school, get paid, and be disgruntled. Is it better to get hardworking 3-4 star talent and pepper the roster with top-end talent that you recruit or get to transfer rather than trying to fill your class with guys who are looking for big money from day one before they've proven themselves?

They're all looking for a payday.

Yes, and the ones who are humble and not making much, are one season away from threatening the portal for more $.

Kelly doesn’t want pay day guys and I agree with him. Denver Harris is that guy

The game is ruined, first time a five star kid gets coached up...he's gonna bolt.

For 5 star linemen and linebackers I think you’re better off spending the money of high schoolers.

Quarterbacks get someone proven in the portal.

Schools are getting smarter and prioritizing paying those that are worth the cost and telling the ones asking for big money to look elsewhere, similar to the NFL

Create a culture that successfully develops 3 and 4 stars into championship caliber players and someone else will 100% come along to pay them for that championship caliber when they hit their junior/senior seasons

In today’s college football landscape, as soon as someone proves their worth, someone else pays for it. It’s an arms race, and no matter how you slice it, you need the biggest guns in order to compete

There are no college football “teams” anymore. None of them care about the school they represent or have any intention of being “students”.
It’s pro football without contracts or salary caps.

Are you "just thinking" this because LSU finished outside the top 10, with no 5 stars in the class?

In a way, yes.

Look at the NFL. No team is all 1st round picks. They have role players, UDFAs, etc. You can't build long term success when you're turning over 50% of your roster every year.

Just like the NFL, you need a top QB, and fill in the rest as the budget allows.

As soon as your three stars get developed, they’re looking for a payday. Or to play for a contending team.

Once those players develop, they will simply hit the portal chasing an NIL deal.

Recruiting is now three fold. Have to recruit to retain current players. Recruit the portal. And recruit HS players.

Iowa is a development team and do a dang good job of developing 2 and 3 star players into NFL draft picks. Now they will develop those players and when they are upperclassmen they will be looking for money to stay at Iowa or transfer elsewhere.

How is that different than any other team that is keeping their players? The NIL affects everyone the same. If you play, you pay.

Iowa is getting an equal cut of the B1G pie. They are selling out their stadium just like Ohio State. They aren't spending on elite high school talent, like OSU, so where is all that revenue going? Iowa and Vandy are breaking my heart.

If it were that easy to just "develop" guys, everyone would be trying to do that.

Most of the time "developing" is just good scouting IMO. Guys will always go under the radar.

Exactly what's happening with FSU. We've got projected starters for next year jumping in the portal to either get more money or hold FSU hostage for more money. It's not college football anymore, it's just auction football. College has nothing to do with it

You realize that it is still illegal for the Athletic Department to pay players right?
