I will say this, the overlap of the NHL with college baseball and college softball is a huge issue in trying to spend time watching the sport amongst these others speaking from a family that loves baseball/softball in a southern state

I feel this way in general with sports. The older I get, the less time I have to watch games. Honestly, I really only get bothered if I miss LSU football, or baseball (mlb and college). I hate that I’m apathetic about hoops, but between the NCAA and NBA, they don’t care about entertaining a certain sector of the population.

They have way more exposure now with Games on TNT, ESPN, and ABC along with every game on ESPN+.
I love watching the guys on TNT's pregame/intermission/postgame show. I think it's much better than ESPN's.

NHL ON TNT

Their x account is a good follow too.

I grew up on NHL hockey and grew into enjoying international competitions much, much more. Except, come playoffs time, I don't watch anything else but NHL. I can see how the interest would be focused on the Olympics hockey rather than regular season hockey, unfortunately.

Thanks brother

My brother-in-law got me hooked on the Stars but a lot of their games get blacked out in my area, this will come in very handy!

No. Casual Americans only tune in for playoff hockey.

It’s like thinking people will watch MLS if the US won the World Cup. They wouldn’t

My Grandfather grew to love ice hockey when he was a diplomat in Canada. He ended up settling for watching the Redskins on black and white TV and listening to pro baseball on the radio at night.
When I watch NHL on my large color TV, I remember him and wish he were still around to enjoy the images.

(Pro basketball may be not so subtly sending people to NHL games,)

There will be a temporary bump in ratings post-Olympics but it'll fall back down.

If the casual fan who enjoyed the gold medal game realizes that the NHL playoffs is almost as fast and intense as that game, perhaps they would tune in, and maybe pick up a team to follow going forward.

I see the NHL as a regional niche sport outside the original 6 markets. I live outside Raleigh and when I travel the state for work, if the Canes are playing I have to ask the bar to put one TV on the game 50% of the time.

Doubtful. With HD television, the other sports actively trying to offend their bases, the action of the sport itself you would think so.

Of course not. You can’t compare the quality of the NHL with MLS. That’s like hoping more people in Baton Rouge will watch little league games because LSU won the CWS.

However, I do agree. The NHL will get a small uptick but it won’t last because something else will come along and grab the masses attention.

Yeah, but unless you like watching juniors or the girls, we just don’t get much of it.

I wish they would play on international sized rinks at the Olympics. The main rink of the 3 at our HS home rink was international sized. I played defense and it certainly made a difference with the longer and much wider ice surface

It didn't last year after the 4 Nations Faceoff. So no. All the casuals that tuned in will suddenly not care about hockey again.

NBC was such a shitty TV partner. I'm glad they're gone.

Great memory. Thank you for sharing. I've heard about how my parents watched the 1980 game with Mom's parents and wish I could have seen that. Her mother (nana, to me) was this delightful, gentle human being who was positive in every situation.

You can pick which team’s broadcast you want on ESPN+. I watch Panthers broadcast on home and away games.

HD television
It's really made watching hockey a great experience. Before it was so hard to see the puck. Remember when Fox had the trailer lit up to help see it during their games?

I think the best way to watch hockey is in bed with no lights on. My 65" TV looks like a drive in movie screen from my bed. I'm retired, and single, so I can stay up and watch all three periods of a Stars game that didn't start until 8:30 or 9 PM.

My brother lived in Alaska for around 40 of his 72 years and raised a family there. His youngest son, who still lives in the Anchorage area, is a big hockey fan. He and I text a lot and talk on the phone some during the NHL Playoffs. He's really the only person I can talk with about it. They are so far behind us time-wise, I can call him before a game goes to OT at 11 pm my time, and not worry about waking someone up. I've really missed the NHL since they took off for the Olympics.

I live in Ruston, LA now and don't know anyone here that watches games.
