Just so we're on the same page here, he was talking about the Cubs, correct?

No matter if the Cubs do have a better farm system than the Astros, they still are the Cubs so it won't mean squat.

They should aspire to be as good as the Royals and Pirates. There is a pretty good chance that they will end up owning all the MLB records for ineptitude, taking over from the expansion Mets and other horrible teams from the past. What puzzles me is how they draw any fans at all. I think you could stump any baseball fan by asking them to name at least 3 of their players on this team. Maybe they will draw fans this year just for the new AL teams coming in, since they let Herr Selig stick it up their backside.

From what I read they won't be getting anymore revenue sharing because they are a big market. So the owner is basically taking all the risk that this thing works out. I'd much rather be the worst and see that they're trying to build a system than losing draft picks for signing mediocre players and never actually getting good. It's really a wait and see game, but I'm willing to wait a couple years to when a few of their prospects are ready. And those of you who say they don't have any prospects

The Astros have a lot of prospects in the pipeline. Will they ever amount to anything? Who knows.

$25 million payroll doesn't give any Astro fan any warm and fuzzies. This could very well be another 100-loss team.

Am I excited about next Sunday night? Hells yeah! I'll be in Section 127, Row 15, Seat 9 rocking out with my cock out, screaming until I get a headache and then screaming some more. This is why you're a sports fan. Sometimes you're the pre-season favorite, sometimes you're riding on nothing but blind faith.

I never thought I'd see the Saints win a Super Bowl, but it happened. I just hope I can see the 'Stros win a World Series before I die. Maybe there was a reason I paid $1,082.50 for a Game 4 Nosebleed to see the W-Sox dogpile. Maybe I'll get to take my son to the 2019 World Series where the 'Stros will be victorious!

Also, I'm happy the Astros are out of the boring NL Central! Out of a division with the armpit cities of the US like Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and St Louis.

I'm excited to start a 19-game a year rivalry with the Texas Rangers. I'm excited about the late night West Coast games. I'm excited to be an Astros fan.

Geaux 'Stros!!!

The whole trolling bit is worn out. Please shut the frick up about that

The system lacks difference makers, esp on the mound. It's hard for me to buy in that they are so much stronger now, when it's the same players at the top. It's basically the same crew as last year that was close to last., you should do your research. shite your best prospect is a drug user.

Who were marginal at best, so I'm not sure it's saying much. It's almost sonething that should happen by default.

Doesn't explain a 20 position jump. No way is this a top 5 dark system. I thought you agreed with we earlier with the sarcasm stuff but maybe I misunderstood.

but given how the owners are behaving right now how do we know they won't just sell them off to the Yankees and Dodgers right before they have to pay them?

We don't. We also don't know that if they did spend a bunch of money they wouldn't be like the Mets?

Also, why do people think not spending the money now meand pocketing it and not saving money so they can pay their young guys if they pan out later?

Yeah, It's not like you don't bash Houston teams when ever you can or anything?

Seriously, what ultimately is your point? Lets say they have a bottom 5 minor league system like you suggest. What should they do about it? How would spending more money at the Major league level fix that? Have they not taken moves to approve it? There has only been 1 draft since last year at this time and the new owners took over. What more should they be doing?

I was also surprised that the Astros jumped up as high as they did in all these rankings. Only 2 of their top 10 have played above A ball, way too much risk.

I've said that I think they're rebuilding the right way though. But they won't see the reward of their system for another 3-4 years, if ever.

i'm a lifelong astros fan and I actually agree ( to an extent) with Lester...the astros were upgraded severely as a farm system based solely on depth. they had a system chock full of guys who had no chance of ever even making AAA ball and they made some trades and got a few mid-tier prospects to go with Singleton and Cosart (upper tier). Both are still unproven and they are the highest value Houston got...Cosart may profile more as a closer or reliever and Singleton is serving a drug suspension and may not develop the kind of power you want at 1B in the AL.

Their last couple of drafts have been rated pretty well, but those guys are so far away, there are no guarantees with anyone---Springer, Desheilds, have taken some steps forward and you would expect them to make the big league team in 2014...Lets say for giggles that Springer, Deshields and Singleton all make the big team in 2014 and perform as ML average players for their positions, you still have a terrible team with NO pitching and no real pitching prospects outside of Cosart who are near the big league level and who project as more than middle-back end rotation guys....
