Will NBA owners take advantage of ‘Doomsday Clause’ to avoid paying players full salary?

The CBA includes a clause called the force majeure event clause that includes multiple dramatic scenarios -- including epidemics -- that the league could trigger in the event of a worst-case scenario. Other instances that could trigger the clause include natural disasters and war. The next scheduled paycheck for players comes on Sunday, and those will be fulfilled.

Some do and some don't.... But charity would be the right way to go.

Why should they be paid if there are no games?... would it not make sense to prorate, if the season is over?

Considering 2/3 of the league never pull "major" free agents, that isn't much of a threat..

I can see you haven't figured out charities are just scams for executives and administrators

Guess Lebron is going to have to paint the gate to his house himself from here on out.

Except this clause exists and was collectively bargained and agreed upon by the players.

Do people think the owners don’t have every right to implement this? I agree that it would definitely cause a shitstorm, but I wouldn’t blame them.

It’s not like the big money guys can go anywhere else and get paid the same to play the game. What would they threaten? To walk away from their massive contracts before next year and lose even more cash? That would be retarded.

I’m betting they hold back the money. I’m betting ESPN holds back TV money to the league.

Owners and Commish have no ball sack, they let the idiots run the league. They wouldn't dare try this.

If they do this the money should be used to help pay hourly employees who won’t work due to the season being canceled.

Are you serious? You can't be this stupid. In 2024, the Lakers, Celtics or Knicks offer a max contract to Player X for hundreds of millions of dollars. That player is going to say, "No. Back in 2020 all you owners invoked the Doomsday Clause and didn't pay us for the remainder of that season. Therefore, I refuse to sign a contract."*

These players will sign quicker than they bent the knee to their ChiCom overlords.

They COULD do it but it would be horribly shortsighted IMHO.

There’s what 14 games left? Shaving roughly 1/8 in salary off the players saves a little now but is potentially a bad PR move and will make things contentious.

The owners are all successful, money making businessmen. They will certainly invoke their collectively bargained clause to not pay the specified amount per game.

The player negotiate that their salaries are a % of revenue is the salary cap. Revenue will certainly be down. Their salaries will be down.

Goodwill only goes so far when speaking about millions and millions of dollars.
